In Charles City the Elks club provided meals to 100 boys and girls, offering food and care in a community event aimed at supporting local youths.
City Engineer J. F. Sproatt announces plans to apply for a $63,000 Works Progress Administration grant to build a third asphalt runway at the municipal airport. Officials say the project would provide the finest airport facilities between Chicago and the west coast.
Joseph Harold Hal Skelley, a Davenport stage and screen performer killed in a 1934 Connecticut auto crash, left an estate worth about $100,000. The estate is divided equally between his wife and his mother. Skelley formerly resided in Davenport.
Marvin T. Grattan, Civil War veteran, will spend Christmas in Fort Madison state penitentiary after the Iowa Supreme Court denied his appeal of an eight year sentence for the 1935 slaying of Claude Meade in Decorah amid a race horse dispute. He had been out on a $5,000 bond pending appeal.
Danforth Clark aged 44 a farmer living southwest of Rockwell was killed when a large tree he was cutting fell on him. He left home about 9 30 a m and was not found until noon when the dog brought his cap to the house. His body lay pinned beneath the tree's butt.
Webster county grand jury questioned 28 witnesses on police conditions in Fort Dodge and the ouster of Police Chief James Huebsch tied to alleged illegal sale of pinball machines seized in raids. County Attorney Edward Breen said a vote might be reached tonight.
In Sioux City during a theater bank night show of about 2,000 attendees, burglars cracked the William Ehlerman Wholesale Jewelry Co. safe on the second floor of the Orpheum theater building and fled with diamonds worth $30,000. The blast shattered two storefront windows and damaged office fixtures.
Charles Pearson a 60 year old Essex farmer received a 30 day jail sentence after a protest following an automobile accident with Harold Johnson. He chose jail over paying 26 dollars 50 cents in court costs and damages. The attending physician said he may recover but will not have much of a face left.
An 11 year old boy, Paul Michelet Jr., was abandoned by his father in Anandale Minnesota and left to wait for a ride to St Paul to live with an uncle. After an hour of waiting they went to a telephone office and Sheriff M Lyodn was notified.
The court house will be closed all day Friday for Christmas. The closure is a yearly observance announced today.
Ex-Senator Simeon Fess of Ohio died in a Washington hotel after suffering a heart attack. He was a key Republican figure, serving as keynoter and temporary chairman in 1928 and as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1920 and 1931. Carrie Welsh, his former secretary, found him collapsed while planning Christmas shopping.

Funeral rites for Mrs. George S. Kerr were conducted yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home and burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers named were Frank Stewart George Slosser E B Hammer Carl Jungbluth George Brown and C R McCutchen.
John A. Bailey a former Washington resident died yesterday at a sanitarium in Tucson Arizona after months of illness. Funeral services will be held in Phoenix where his sister Mrs Ralph Gowey resides. Born October 1 1885 he lived in Washington attended local high school worked at F L Wilson Shoe Store Cedar Rapids and Columbus Ohio before health declined. He married Vera Rogers in 1914 and Washington remains his home town. Mrs Bailey will travel to San Pedro California. He was survived by several brothers and sisters.
Manager Ralph Pratt announces a free Christmas show for children at the State theater Thursday at 10 AM. The event, moved from Christmas morning to Thursday to suit families shopping before Christmas, is advertised via rural telephone lines with free participation courtesy of Charles Crane. The program emphasizes light comedy and short length to entertain boys and girls.

Louis L. Lemley aged 70 died after a long illness at 12 30 PM in his home 737 West Monroe street. He had been in poor health for twenty years and bedfast for over two years. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Saturday at L A Jones funeral home with burial in Film Grove cemetery. He was born January 3 1866 in Dutch Creek to Caleb and Ellen Lemley and moved to Washington in 1913. Surviving are his wife Hettie Harvey, two brothers Charles Lemley of Washington and Caleb Lemley of Iowa City, and a grandson Ralph Lemley of Tipton. a son Ralph preceded in death.
Southwestern Iowa officers chased two post office burglars who struck New Market with little loss while three masked men robbed College Springs of stamps worth 200 dollars. They bound Everett Vaughn, a high school basketball star, who happened to be nearby.
Mrs Augusta Laithly and her daughter Hannah moved yesterday into the apartment over the Gamble store, settling into the residence above the shop.
Des Moines reports a shift from mild winter in Iowa to much colder conditions late Thursday as strong northwest winds sweep in. The federal weather bureau predicts no widespread white Christmas though scattered flurries are possible in parts of the state.

Mr and Mrs Irvin Koenig and Dukie of Riverside visited the Watkins home last evening.
M A McKay owner of the McKay Music Service and longtime Washington educator has been appointed sales manager of the western division of G Conn Co Elkhart Indiana overseeing sales across seventeen states with headquarters there He must liquidate his Washington store and move to Elkhart by January 4 threatening to leave a local band director to possibly take over the shop McKay built bands in the schools and directed the Washington Municipal Band earning statewide recognition in music circles He previously held the Conn franchise for nine counties and helped put Washington on the Conn map.
The Iowa Senate sent a bill to the House to fund unemployment insurance for about 250000 workers, effective in 1938 and limited to a maximum of 15 weeks. The bill passed without debate with one vote against by W Patterson. The House recessed to 1 30 pm as they review changes and remaining legislative details. A separate repeal bill would erase the $2 head tax for nearly a million people, while leaving prior-year assessments as judgments. Governor elect Kraschel’s approval is sought.
