Several thousand children attended the fifth annual city council Christmas party in Keokuk. They were invited as a reward for good behavior on the 4th of July and Halloween.
Two men and a woman were jailed after officers raided the Highland Inn hotel. Ten city county and state officers participated while two other men and two other women were released after questioning.
The Iowa House, by 90 to 6, refused six men appointed by Governor Herring to attend a special session. Lawmakers feared seating them would endanger the constitutionality of the state unemployment compensation act the legislature was convened to pass.
Nearly 1000 attended the Christmas program at the Methodist Episcopal church in Iowa City for The Nativity. The cornet quartet including Don Chapman Charles Beckman James McCollum and Frederick Simpson played carols from the church tower. After the service girl carolers directed by Margaret Dane visited homes of sick and shut in members.
Sidney Miss Ruby Brown 18, central figure in the Mawhor kiss theft slaying, sues the Mawhor estate for 5000 to compensate for damages from a kiss. Her father is serving eight years in prison for the crime.
The Johnson County Wildlife Conservation Bucket plans winter feeding for quail coveys. Dr Harry R Jenkinson and Hd Sybil, game warden, urge reports of coveys needing protection and will assist in care for the birds.
Ames police arrested G E Sims after he attempted to pass a bad check to pay for the book Gone with the Wind at a local store. The vendor reported the attempt and Sims was taken into custody. The suspect, 30, faced charges related to presenting a counterfeit or dishonored check. The incident ended with the check not clearing and the suspect’s arrest.
Spirit Lake reports a near drowning when a car carrying Mr and Mrs Henry Schwien and Mrs Schwien's father Louis Jehue broke through ice on Lake Okoboji. Mrs Schwien crawled from a car window to guide her husband and father to shore as the vehicle sank in about 10 feet of water. Ice depth was roughly seven inches.
Mrs Susan Holcroft housekeeper for Martin Wolz testified she wants to witness Tony Thompson's execution for the murder of Oakville farmer Wolz. She says Thompson is one of two men who fired on Wolz in his farm home two years ago and is the lone eyewitness to the crime.
With ten days left in 1936 eight people have died in county auto crashes, nearly triple the three fatalities in all of 1935. Injuries total 96 this year versus 54 in 1935, as 49 injury crashes are reported to the sheriff, with many unreported minor hurts. All fatal accidents occurred in the last six months, starting July 13, making this the worst year on record for Washington County crashes.
A new board floor is being laid on the upper floor of the court house in the corridor to the court room and offices of the county superintendent of schools, the county engineer and the county welfare worker. Albert Simpson is doing the work.
In Farson on December 22, a consumer strike halted electric service to a 48 mile regional project across Wapello Davis and Jefferson counties. Sixty two residents refused payment and had their meters removed, while Dr C A Henry leader of the strike announced it would continue until rates drop below neighboring plants.
Mr and Mrs Abner Stout of Keota were observed shopping in Washington today with focus on their casual outing and local family life.

Sheriff reports more road accident injuries this year versus last, with county fatalities possibly up. Arrests for driving while intoxicated rise to seven this year from six. additional arrests show drivers under the influence but lacking sufficient evidence for charges. Liquor-related arrests total 23 so far, up from 15, including cases where liquor influenced forgery or bad checks.
Iowa Senate moves to reread the unemployment insurance bill before a special session vote. An informal meeting agreed to amendments drafted for consideration, including a three member full time administrative commission with $38 600 salaries each and removal for cause by the governor. The commission would lack an executive director and require two thirds senate confirmation.
Scout meeting for troop 32 opened with each scout writing one good turn. Dr. F. M. Mast taught drills and right and left face. Troop split into two patrols of four. Acorn badges offered for bringing in new members. Boys 12 plus invited to join via troop 32 members.
Iowa counties spent 529,852 last year on tax assessor compensation. Statewide costs vary by city form and per diem rates. Dickinson county led per capita spending at 881% cents, while ten low-cost counties would have saved about 289 thousand dollars if costs matched the lowest group.
At a special meeting the Washington city council sold bonds totaling 24 785 dollars to the highest bidder to finance six miles of street resurfacing with crushed rock and a bituminous top. National Bank of Washington bought the 9 785 dollar issue at a 56 premium and 5 percent interest. White Phillips Corporation of Davenport bought 15 000 dollars at a 169 premium and 2 1/2 percent interest.
More than 1,900 people reported dead from the quake centered near San Vincent el Salvador, with officials in San Salvador and Mexico City relay the grim estimate amid disaster responses and search efforts.
A coroner's jury in Fairfield Iowa absolved Leland Whittaker, driver of the car that struck Dolph Johnson yesterday. The verdict stated Johnson's death was an unavoidable accident.

Two burly gunmen raided a Charles City sporting goods store early today, shotguns and ammunition taken, then fled in a stolen car. They terrorized a nearby farm family, cut telephone wires, and reportedly kidnapped a store employee before a crash near the Reinecke farm. Authorities name Peter Hayes and Mike McCann as suspects.
An armed gunman robbed the Sheldon railroad depot early today, holding up the night agent at gunpoint and escaping with 85.80 dollars. He fled with a second man armed with a sawed-off shotgun, into a car. Suspects described as about 25 to 30 years old and the other roughly 45 to 50.
Dr. Arthur Atack, pastor of the Methodist church, announces two Wednesday events. The usual mid week service will be at 2 30, a time that has proven popular since starting about a month ago. Young people are urged to attend tomorrow evening at 7 30 for Christmas carols expected to draw a large crowd.
Vic Crone announced the Crone Jack Sprat Store will start its annual Baby Beef Contest tomorrow as part of Christmas displays. Prizes include three awards with duplicates for ties, a common feature in past years, while the contest is free to enter and aims to gauge the baby beef weight.
Sickles, janitor of the courthouse, expresses thanks for a five dollar Christmas gift from the Woman's Relief Corps given at their Saturday meeting. The corps meets in the courthouse basement in appreciation of his help with their meetings.
