City wage error corrected on pay raise figures

The Evening Journal clarifies that the Washington City Council did not set the lowest city wage at 4.08 dollars per hour for all workers. Manual labor, street, sanitation and similar posts will see the higher rate, while office staff and water plant operators will remain lower at 3.25 dollars per hour starting January 1. The paper regrets the earlier error.

Holiday closures in Washington County and city offices

All Washington County and City of Washington government offices will be closed on Friday December 24 and Friday December 31 for Christmas and New Year holidays. Municipal building and courthouse close on Fridays since holidays fall on Saturdays. Retail stores mostly close Christmas and New Year’s Days. Evening Journal skips Dec 25 and returns Jan 1. city library open until 3 p.m. on Dec 24.

The Washington Junior Theater offers a bus trip for fourth through ninth graders to Cedar Rapids Community Theater to see Christmas Nightingale on Dec 29. Des Moines Salvation Army captain David Grindle tackled an armed robber who demanded cash at a Central National Bank drive up. The suspect Larry A. Green was jailed and facing U.S. Magistrate Court as about $2,000 was recovered. The incident marked the tenth bank robbery in Des Moines since Oct. 23.

Argo Merchant oil spill worsens as tanker buckles

The Liberian tanker Argo Merchant split from its grounded wreck at Nantucket Shoals and dumped 7.6 million gallons of heavy oil into the Atlantic. Premiums Rise for Medicare Clients in 1977 Increase

Washington reports the Department of Health, Education and Welfare will raise monthly Medicare premiums from $7.20 to $7.70 starting July 1, 1977, affecting about 25.4 million elderly and disabled.
