Due to heating problems at Kalona Recreation Center the Kalona Town Players shift the production of Godspell to Mid Prairie High School in Wellman. The show runs December 27 and 28 at 8 p.m. with admission 1.50 for adults and 0.75 for children. Season tickets honored.
The group offers play books at the public library for Life With Father auditions. Eight women and four men are cast, with three major women roles and one major man role, plus four boys ages 7 to 18. Tryouts 2–4 p.m. Jan. 9 and 7–10 p.m. Jan. 10 in the YMCA McCleery Room.
The Washington Post Office will be closed on Saturday December 25 and Saturday January 1 for Christmas and New Year holidays. No city or real mail deliveries on those days. Lobby closed Christmas Day due to no mail traffic. Final mail dispatch on December 24 is at 5 p.m. to allow staff to spend Christmas Eve with their families.
Iowa farms housed 14.2 million hogs and pigs at the start of the month, including 12.2 million market hogs, according to the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. The September-November pig crop reached 5 million, up 28 percent from 1975.

Larry Green, accused of robbing the Central National Bank and Trust Co. downtown Des Moines for 2000, told U.S. Magistrate Ronald Longstaff he would rather go to a federal prison than Polk County Jail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 28 with bond set at 50 000.
A mid morning blaze six miles southeast of Riverside destroyed a two story house, leaving Morris Bender, 23, his wife Pat, and their two young children without shelter. Firefighters could not determine a cause. The family and a nephew escaped to relatives as police assist with lodging. The home belonged to James Swailes of Lone Tree and stood on a gravel road off highway 218 in Highland Township.

He cites dry ground, low water tables, and wind pattern changes reducing southwest storms as reasons for potentially less snowfall, though a white Christmas remains possible if snow melts into rivers. The heaviest pre Christmas snow was December 22 and 23, 1961, with storms leaving Des Moines and Guthrie Center heavily buried and thousands stranded. The average annual snowfall in Iowa is about 32 inches.
