Burlington judge Smith Wrede changed his plea to guilty in a Des Moines federal court on interstate transport of stolen cattle. He received a suspended sentence and three years probation after admitting he stole 14 Angus cattle from Washington County and moved them to Missouri to sell. Arrest followed county sheriffs and LAKE MILLS officials’ cooperation.

Fire aboard Cypriot tanker Calypso drifts near Cuba
The Calypso loaded with molasses battled an engine room fire off Cuba's north coast as 34 crewmen were rescued by the US merchant ship Green Port. Coast Guard plane reported 38 Cypriots and two Cubans aboard with no injuries. Green Port awaited the cutter Diligence to assist. Cuba offered help then allowed US Coast Guard involvement as the tanker drifted toward Cuban waters.
