Former Crawfordsville Man Killed in Port Byron Crash
Ronald Spangler, 22, a former Crawfordsville resident, died in a head on collision near Port Byron Illinois. He and two other youths were students at Augustana College Rock Island. Survived by parents Chester and spouse, a sister Karla McKinney, grandmothers Jenny Spangler and Jenny Lauderman. Funeral 1 pm Tuesday at Crawfordsville United Methodist Church.

Supreme Court rules states cannot limit welfare aid below federal standards
In a unanimous decision the Supreme Court held that states may not restrict AFDC benefits to a narrower group than the Social Security Act allows. Illinois had limited aid to dependent children 18 to 20 who are full time in high school or vocational programs, denying college students. Justice Brennan said Congress did not grant states authority to tailor eligibility within the federal age group, so Illinois must conform to federal standards to receive matching funds. Chief Justice Burger concurred that state participation isn t mandatory and adherence to the act determines eligibility for funds.
