An elderly Mount Pleasant man known as Santa Claus to two needy children was jailed on charges of writing bad checks totaling 27800 dollars. Errol J. Shaler of Archbold Ohio allegedly gave a Mount Pleasant motel operator a 20000 dollar check as part of a fake real estate deal and faced counts of defrauding an innkeeper in Ottumwa and grand theft auto. He flew into Ottumwa December 2, wrote a 25000 dollar house payment check, donated 500 dollars to the Salvation Army, treated two children to meals, bought clothing, and covered travel with bad checks.

Century-old Burlington bell eyed for downtown mall
Burlington officials say a century-old 2,225-pound bell may grace a downtown mall. The bell, once at the fire station, was borrowed for Mount Pleasant’s Old Settlers and Thresher Reunion. its borrow date is unknown. Local history buff B L Robinson helped recover it, and it was on display last August in Mount Pleasant.
