A 73 year old Iowa woman asks to forfeit her 19.50 monthly old age pension saying the country needs money for war. She notes savings for medicine and help from daughters and that she sews for the Red Cross. Mary Huneke replies that patriotism is praised but sacrifice of livelihood is not required.
In Council Bluffs Pete Katzenstein shot and killed his wife Ruth after a quarrel at the Broken Rail tavern. He wounded himself fatally, leaving their 2-year-old son Gerald nearby while janitor Jim Hansen and waitress Miss Broson alerted police. Ruth lay in a hall, Pete with a .41 caliber revolver beside him.
Lieut. Jack D. Dale 25 of Davenport, grandson of Estelle Disbrow, is cited as an air hero for repeatedly attacking Japanese transports and barges in the Philippines. A Davenport High School graduate, he attended the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose College before earning his degree in 1938.
Sioux City report of four year old Newell Rains, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Rains of South Sioux City Nebraska, drowning after he fell through a hole in Crystal Lake ice near home. The father located the hole and recovered the body after an hour long probe while firefighters attempted revival.
Police hunt two masked men who robbed Weiss grocery taking 120 dollars from clerks and customers. Both wore stockings on their faces. one carried a sawed off shotgun and the other a large automatic. Two similarly masked men robbed another suburban store of 300 dollars on December 3.
Johann Feeken 45 alias John Miller Forest City farm worker waived preliminary hearing on failure to register as an alien in Waterloo. Commissioner Arthur W Hyke ordered held in Humboldt county jail at Dakota City. Bond set at 1000 dollars. Feeken born in Germany came to the United States 18 years ago.
Detroit December 20 President R J Thomas of the United Automobile Workers said the CIO and AFL agreed there shall be no strikes during the war emergency and urged management to make sacrifices too He noted the CIO and AFL asked the federal government for proper mediation machinery between capital and labor to settle disputes before action.
Captain O J Brown of the service troop and Captain Walter G Conner of Troop D in the 113th Cavalry are transferred from the mechanized regiment to army air fields. Brown heads to Fourth Interceptor Command at March Field California while Conner moves to Kelly Field San Antonio Texas. The transfers reflect a broader reorganization under new age regulations with younger officers filling Troop D.
Census of Manufacturers reports indicate a yearly U S demand exceeding six million dollars for thermometers used in households, industry, and clinical settings.
A Friday afternoon Christmas program titled Our Gifts was staged by the high school vocal instrumental music and physical education departments in the auditorium. Helen Sheetz introduced the program featuring students, parents James Bey and Marjorie Logan, and others. Maurice Baryton led the orchestra. Boyd White conducted the mixed chorus with tableaux by Ruth Flood and Josephine Lambert. The performance included carols, narration by Laura Jean Stout as the Angel, and a manger scene with Lila Holden and Raymond Bear as Mary and Joseph. A brass sextet and trumpeters opened the procession, led by David Livingston and Jean Atchison carrying the flags.
Ralph Pratt announces a free Christmas show for children at the State theater next Wednesday morning December 24 at 10 o clock. Edgar Bergen appears with Charlie McCarthy in the feature film along with two color cartoons and four short subjects about Famous Movie Dogs. The annual event is provided by the Pratts for Washington county children and no advance tickets are needed.
Earl Cummings of the state highway patrol announced that Washington County truck drivers must renew chauffeurs licenses by Friday December 26 or travel to another county before January 1 when a patrol examiner will handle renewals. He noted renewals cannot occur after the new year. Cummings, visiting Washington each Friday for license examinations, renewed over 100 licenses yesterday.
A trial by jury held yesterday in the court of Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee found Cyril Greiner not guilty of assault and battery after hearing evidence and attorney arguments. Complainant was John Koch. Jurors were Ralph Dougherty N. L. Black Walter Longer B. E. Babcock John M. Pratt and Marion Anderson. Defense was by L. J. Kehoe and prosecution by County Attorney John C. Owen.
McLaughlin secretary, Dick Marshall treasurer, Laura Jean Stout and Charles Hennon librarians led by staff, assisted by other students. The music organizations thank local churches for loaned properties used in their activities.
Washington reporters note that wartime shifts in Latin America may have reduced Axis inroads. A special House committee said Axis powers built air bases fuel depots storage depots and short wave radio stations in Latin American republics. After many nations declared war, these bases and stations were placed under observation or control.
George Havel filed a district court suit in Washington County against the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America and W A Bechtel Company seeking 2500 in damages. He alleges land intrusion on Oct 25 1941 fences were cut and fences and crops damaged and 57 head of two year old steers escaped on Nov 8 causing illness and loss. Sufficient entities named: George Havel Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America W A Bechtel Company Equitable Life Assurance Company of the United States John Robinson.
A vesper service at the Presbyterian church features a 70 voice choir directed by Mrs. Henry Shields with senior and junior choirs. Out of town soloists include Margaret Corbin Doris Forney Reich Burton Kludt Harris White La Verne Flambo and Mrs Frank Coles plus Mrs Dunham Morrison and Mrs Claude Reister. Ruth Michels will play marimba and the program is varied.
Erich Tillman area supervisor of surplus marketing administration visited Washington county over distribution of food commodities. Sixty eight rural schools signed up for the school lunch program and will receive fruits and other commodities soon. Town schools in Washington Riverside and Brighton use commodities on hot lunch programs with several years of participation. Tillman noted the possibility of switching from direct distribution to the stamp plan used in 56 Iowa counties to widen markets and improve diets for those in need while aiding national defense.
A nine pound dressed duck at the Whittaker community sale fetched 183.25 dollars for the American war relief fund. Mrs. Tom Sterling contributed the duck and Roger Sherman received the check on behalf of the Red Cross. A large crowd saw rapid bidding starting at 100 dollars and a hat pass finalized the total.
Mrs Frances Richardson aged 80 died at ten this morning at the home of her sister Mrs Maggie Brown 34 East Fourth street after a week of serious illness. Burial will be at Winston Missouri with funeral plans listed as undecided. She was born November 12 1861 in Gentry County Missouri and lived most of her life there before moving to Washington seven years ago. Survived by four brothers and sisters including Mrs Frony Russell Parsons Kansas Dave Brady Toledo Iowa William Brady Gallatin Missouri and Mrs Maggie Brown Washington.
Dale Rathmel and Hattie Rebecca Laubach of Washington secured a marriage license here yesterday, the 99th license issued in the county.

Justice of the Peace J. and Bovee sentences Roy Johnson of Wellman to pay a $25 fine plus costs for reckless driving. Represented by L. J. Kehoe, he was arrested on Road 1 south of Wellman by State Highway Patrolmen Don Braden and John Rhynsberger.
