A brief dispatch reports rumors that the federation’s president will be re elected to lead a march of 25 000 to oppose revolutionists. The note appears in a special Evening Journal item from Paris dated December 20.
Des Moines reports Dr. George A. Gates of Grinnell insists Herron remains on the faculty and endowment terms with Mrs. Rand hinge on his stay. Gates says academic freedom will not be curtailed, despite critics. Separate items note Henry A Chapin’s funeral in Niles, James Mellen pursued by wolves near Butternut, and Hartford City Glass Works fire costing $30,000 with 330 workers displaced.
Chicago markets show mixed wheat and oats with December at 60% and 67% on futures while pork and cattle prices range in varied bids. Buffalo live stock reports list steady cattle demand and higher hogs. St Louis notes higher cash wheat and corn with no major shifts in oats and rye.
Chicago police link M E Bollinger to the death of his wife Theresa Rollinger at 186 Racine Avenue. Evidence includes a charred body found in a burning clothes press and an insurance policy plus deeds found at a saloon. Investigators seek Lena the alleged former lover connected to Bollinger’s Milwaukee Avenue restaurant.
Utica New York December 20 James H Read a bookkeeper received a letter dated December 10 in which Leroy W Midlam asked for ten dollars for his destitute wife in New York City and warned of his impending death Read learned Midlam was at the Metropolitan hotel Fayette street and arranged access to his room Midlam age about 62 shot himself He had a Georgia birth and earlier business ties in Michigan with Horatio Seymour Jr a Democrat and former Marquette postmaster under Cleveland's first term
The Panhandle incident left Jake Still dead after a gun fight with B B Ray sixteen miles north of Clarendon. Ray surrendered in Clarendon with bond set at $3,000. Other items include Lt Hobson's Chicago visit and bankruptcy filing by Mason Bros. in Illinois.
In Kansas City on December 20 the 8th annual convention of the American Federation of Labor nears its end after days of deliberation. National officers will be chosen and a next-year meeting site set. Gompers expected to be reelected president, with La Grippe presiding in Chicago.
Sam Keiser of Keoto visited the city last night on the way to Centerville. Mrs. M Morehouse of Oskaloosa, who had been visiting, returned today. D. K Bush and family left this morning for Ottumwa.
