President Dewey’s delegation reviews troops in Macon and proceeds by train to Augusta. New York and Manila convalescents aboard Scandia alight in San Francisco to witness departures. Other items note deaths, imports, and local society events in brief dispatches.
Illinois Governor John R. Tanner, confined by grip at the Waldorf, explains the state’s miner strike was about immigration and protection of workers, not negro labor. He says 40 cents raise won, discharges of obnoxious foremen, stockade torn down, and declares he did his duty as governor.
Logansport Indiana December 19 The attempt to destroy Cass county's court house by tampering with the boiler and water supply was stopped when janitor Girard arrived. The engine room had been broken into and boiler water diverted to a waste pipe leaving flues dry and hot. Girard normally checks the boiler area and shut off the gas upon discovery. The county board offers a large reward for the arrest of the perpetrator.
A 30 year old woman, Mrs. George Craig, was murdered at a farm house near Junction City Kansas with her throat cut from ear to ear and hands injured in a struggle. Suspected killer John Krebs, a farmer and her husband, was in the fields at the time and no arrest had been made. The crime remains a mystery with details of the victim and the husband’s jealousy reported.
C W Whitney manager of the Commercial club was found guilty of a misdemeanor and fined 200 dollars and costs by Judge Willis Clark in the court of criminal correction. He was convicted of unlawfully aiding and abetting and furnishing a place for a public sparring exhibition. A motion for a new trial was filed.
Spanish peace commissioners reached Madrid on Saturday after their trip from Paris. Senor Gamazo led the dissenting Liberals in greeting the delegation, with numerous politicians and officials present as the homecoming passed without notable incident.
The president will submit the peace treaty to the Senate during the current session. It will not be made public while awaiting action.

A rail wreck near Roachdale on the I D and W railway yesterday morning left one man dead and eight or ten seriously injured. Casualty list includes T M Wells of Arcola Illinois killed, and several injured from Indianapolis and nearby towns.
In Baldwinsville twelve miles north of Syracuse a major fire destroyed the Kenyon paper company plant and spread to adjacent structures. Loss estimated at 116000 dollars. Reports from Malaga note the Werra steamer arriving with about two thousand Spanish soldiers after a voyage from Tavana on December sixth. The Adams training ship faces safety issues and may not sail far. Hobart reports Captain Berchgrevens's expedition beginning for Antarctic regions. New York notes Waring memorial fund nearing 100000 dollars with over 80000 already collected and continuing efforts before Christmas.
