The Iowa state railroad commission began a hearing on joint rates, testing its authority against railroads for tariffs on interstate traffic. Port Arthur Tea Export Co seeks orders for filings from several railways. a prior 80 percent joint rate was struck down in 1895 for lack of notice. Fort Wayne Republicans back Judge Taylor for the U.S. Senate. An Oshkosh man obtains a divorce from Anna Bechinski amid claims of a forged marriage. Photographs from Spokane identify a suspect not Otto Mathias in the Wall murder case.
Chicago markets report mixed grain quotes with December wheat at 65% to 66% and corn around 84% to 85%, while pork and lard futures show modest gains. East Buffalo and St Louis include cattle, hogs, sheep quotes with varied receipts, and Milwaukee notes softer wheat and steady oats.
Senator Teller argues for expanding American borders and self government for Filipinos while keeping the flag raised, opposing annexation as bad policy. Williams of Mississippi accuses annexation of forcing 9,000,000 unwilling subjects on the United States and warns of white supremacy and social disruption in Hawaii and beyond.
Teller argues that the nation holds rights of sovereignty and may confer statehood to territories when appropriate. He stresses government powers derive from consent of the governed and urges extending self rule to offended territories as they are prepared.
Chicago December 21. Lena Hecker the young woman linked to the Rollinger wife murder case has arrived in Chicago after three weeks in Oliver Michigan called home by her father's death. Lena, 25, worked at Rollinger's North Robey street restaurant and learned he was married only recently. The alleged motive cited is Rollinger’s pursuit of Lena to claim $8,000 in European property.
Washington reports St. Louis financier Allen Hitchcock nominated by the president to succeed Cornelius Bliss as Secretary of the Interior. Hitchcock, then minister to St. Petersburg, is described as wealthy and a personal friend of the president, with praise from senators. Additional notices cover local resignations, train wreck injuries, and other brief items from across the country.
Indiana Democrats in the state legislature discuss a plan to vote for Gen Benjamin Harrison for U S senator if the Republican caucus agrees to nominate him. Some Republicans warm to the idea while others distrust the motive, fearing a trap for rival candidates. Harrison has said he will not return to public life.
Danville Indiana December 21 petitions asking for a commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment for John Johnson alias Thomas Pinnex will be presented to Governor Tanner Wednesday or Thursday. Nearly all Danville lawyers and many citizens sign. State's Attorney Wilson withholds signing. Judge Bookwalter says Johnson had a fair trial amid cold blooded murder evidence. others contest Governor Northcott and Sheriff Sloan authority. habeas corpus could grant release. Also note Hendricks county Dr. Bradley Bartholomew over 94 still wears a beaver skin cap from fifty years ago.
