Wallace Fagen, Washington County treasurer, says vehicle registrations are unusually slow. The delay suggests long lines in January as owners rush to pay new license taxes before the February 1 penalty deadline. Vehicles must be registered by February 1 to avoid penalties.
Washington County seeks volunteers to help eligible residents complete forms for the 1976 Property Tax and Rent Relief program. Training is at 2:30 p.m. January 9 at the Washington County Court House. CAP office contact 309 West 2nd or call 653-2853 for details.
United Press International reports federal mediators announced a tentative agreement in the United Airlines strike that crippled the nation’s largest domestic carrier. IAM leaders expect a quick union vote while United plans to resume 30 percent of flights by Monday, rising to full service by December 24.
Washington County Cattlemen's Association schedules the annual dinner for January 26 at 6 p.m. in K C Hall Washington with Vigortone Barbershoppers providing entertainment. The Iowa Commerce Commission suspended Clarence W. Jarrard of Washington's warehouse and grain dealer licenses after findings of unpaid grain purchases totaling 106 289 dollars, unpaid checks, poor records, and deferred payments. A hearing is set for January 13 in Des Moines to show cause why licenses should not be revoked.
DES MOINES UPI Clark leader in Senate effort to cut covert CIA aid to Angola met Henry Kissinger to discuss compromise. Clark said U.S. interest remained and Kissinger argued that Soviet moves require a U.S. response to stay a great power.
The Senate and Ford reached a late tax cut compromise but House Democrats refused to accept the spending ceiling. House leaders planned their own bill, delaying a final deal as Ford agreed to a spending restraint without a formal ceiling. Withholding tax increases could begin mid January, hitting lower middle income families hardest.
The House Judiciary Committee orders staff to review Ford's 1974 pardon testimony amid Fox point that he said no Nixon representative raised the issue. White House maintains Ford's account was accurate and complete, disputing a Washington Post report about Aug 28 1974 assurances to Haig.
President Ford vetoed a 45 billion appropriations bill that funds Labor and HEW and includes an antibusing desegregation provision. He called the measure excessive, unjustified, and warned it would swell deficits, increase federal employment by 8000, and undermine fiscal discipline. The veto is his 42nd, with seven overridden.
Michael Ray Adams, 35, Ottumwa, convicted by a Washington County jury of rape in a Feb 7 assault on a 10 year old Ottumwa girl, faces possible life in prison. Sentencing at 1 30 p.m. Friday Jan 9 in the Washington county courtroom after a two hour jury deliberation.
