Retired General Calls Vietnam War a Civil Conflict
Gen. David Shoup, retired Marine commandant and Medal of Honor recipient, labels Vietnam as a civil war not a fight against a Soviet or Chinese threat. He argues that Communists in Southeast Asia pose no direct US danger and repeats that the war is internal strife between Saigon officials and Vietnamese nationalists seeking a better life. He made these remarks in a taped radio interview with Rep. William F. Ryan.
