Break in weather eyed to rush aid to Navajos in snowbound region
In Window Rock Arizona UP I reports rescue teams stood by to deliver 130 tons daily for five days plus hay to feed sheep and cattle as a blizzard trapped about 40 000 to 50 000 Navajo families. The effort follows a Tuesday airlift of 16 tons to 450 locations and involves 21 helicopters and other aircraft. Bordering relief includes 60 tons by truck from Phoenix and 77 tons by air if skies clear. Five deaths including four babies and an elderly shepherd dogged the storm while health officials said many Navajos were suffering pneumonia and some 180 were hospitalized. The aid plan responds to Tribal Chairman Raymond Nakai’s plea but did not declare a federal emergency. The Weather Bureau called the latest storm the tail end of a seven day blizzard.
