The Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce plans to invite the Duke of Windsor to visit the Shenandoah CCC camp, noted as the oldest in Iowa. The proposal reflects local civic interest in royal or high-profile visitors.
Adrian Kale 22 a Western Union college aviation sophomore is in serious condition with a fractured neck vertebrae and other injuries after a skiing accident at Municipal Park.
F J Hoope comptroller of the Iowa liquor control commission will resign effective December 31 after six years in office. He plans to return to private accounting work and has earned a $4 000 annual salary.
Cedar Rapids Carl Stickley 41 a steel worker died after falling 25 feet from a coat conveyor under construction by Abell Howe Construction Co. The accident occurred nearly a year after a similar fatality on the same project and four hours shy of the anniversary. Albert C Martens Abell Howe supervisor died last December 18 after a 40 foot fall from a smokestack ledge.
Fire at the John Morrell & Co. packing plant damaged the building under construction. Officials said the damage was not extensive. Workers on the new building were sprayed by the hose and sent home. City firefighters assisted in putting out the blaze.
Edith Helen Peiffer of Sigourney, a registered nurse, is called to army service and will report January 9 at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock Arkansas. She will serve as a second lieutenant in the reserve Army Nurses Corps and trained at Mercy Hospital Cedar Rapids. Her sister, Mrs. James T. McGary of Victor, was an army nurse in World War I.
Samuel Jones a pioneer of Clay township aged 91 was found dead in bed at his son Floyds home west of Brighton. He had stayed with his son Lloyd recently and funeral arrangements by Hoskins Funeral Home Brighton were incomplete. Survived by sons Floyd and Lloyd three granddaughters and two sisters Mrs G P Judson of Fairfield and Mrs Amy Johnson of New Sharon. Mrs Jones died 42 years ago.
Des Moines Iowa announces 1941 corn allotment of 8 184 781 acres, 8 000 fewer than 1940, due to war uncertainty. I D Klein, head of the agricultural conservation committee, says the small cut reflects inability to gauge next year needs while ensuring domestic supply and safe carryover. County allotments depend on ten year planting trends and adjustments.
Last night brought another shower and a flurry of snow, creating a deep slush on streets and walks. Rainfall totaled 0.20 inches. The lows reached 31 and the high 23 degrees yesterday.
John H Timmerman longtime Journal pressman died today after a heart attack. Born February 26 1871 in Quincy Illinois he lived in Quincy and Washington and married Martha Kunz in 1900. Survived by his widow only. three job titles noted during his years with the Journal.
Washington December 19 1940 administration leaders failed to secure unanimous consent to adjourn the 78th Congress planning three day recesses over the holidays. House leaders still pursued an adjournment resolution but faced a potential Republican blockade.
A longtime Washington resident, a printer for the Journal and former World War book contributor, is remembered for deep county knowledge and firm convictions. Funeral will be Friday at 2:30 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home with Christian Science service. Burial in Quincy beside his two daughters. He joined Baptist church in youth and later attended Christian Science services here. He helped found the Modern Woodman lodge in Quincy and served as counselor.
Washington hosts its annual firemen ball on January 8 at Rendezvous with music by Red Sievers and his eleven piece band from Minneapolis. About 200 couples are expected as advance ticket sales begin. proceeds support a death benefit fund for firemen. Tickets cost one dollar per couple and 25 cents for extra ladies.
Mrs. Rose M. Reid, roll call chairman, releases the final 1940 Red Cross roll call for Washington county. Total county membership reaches 2,143 with cash contributions of 2330.83. The county surpassed its 2,000 member goal. 1091.98 went to national headquarters while the rest remains for local and county work.
Judge Frank Bechly completed the November term of court in Washington after a brief session. The January term will start January 6 with Judge J. G. Patterson presiding. A divorce decree was filed in the case of Catherine Frank versus John William Frank. Judge Bechly revoked the parole of Earl Grady, who must serve six months for larceny after completing a current 30 day sentence for intoxication. he will begin the suspended six month term after this term ends.
Washington churches prepare Christmas programs with choirs Sunday schools and cantatas across denominations. Highlights include United Presbyterian candlelight service, Trinity Lutheran children's program, and St Paul Evangelical programs at church and county home with multiple soloists and orchestral pieces.
A candlelight service at 7 P M on Sunday features an organ prelude and carols including O Come All Ye Faithful Adeste Fideles and He Shall Feed His Flock. The traditional pageant names readers and players such as Wendell Baker Mr and Mrs R R Noonan Mr and Mrs A L Griffith and several listed shepherds and angels.
A Christmas program at First United Presbyterian features a candle light service on December 22 at four o clock with pre service music. Trumpeters Robert McLaugh and others perform familiar carols including Joy to the World I Come All Ye Faithful It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night broadcast outside.
Mrs G W Corbin aged 94 died at 10 16 this morning in her home 409 West Main Street. She had declined in health over weeks and bedfast since Monday. Funeral by L A Jones pending word from granddaughter Margaret Corbin in Austin Texas. She was a Methodist and survived by siblings Mas Beenblossom and Ella Hopkins and by two granddaughters Margaret of Austin and Nita Corbin.
The Chicago Times cites sources saying German planes bombed Dublin and Belfast as Britain and Greece strike Nazi forces. Churchill tells the House of Commons that with U S support a strong allied power will be built in 1941, aims to seize Bardia, extend Libyan operations, and strengthen Britain against invasion while Hitler urges Britain to be rebuilt for defense and wider action.
A residence at 1000 North Sixth Avenue, north of the American Pearl button factory, was destroyed by a morning fire about 4 15. Delmar Miller and family were away. the house and contents were a total loss. This marked the second blaze in a year in the same neighborhood. Insurance is believed to cover the loss.
