Merle Smith provided bear steaks for the Junior Chamber of Commerce annual election meeting in Boone. Smith reportedly shot the bear during a hunting trip in Canada.
Twenty student flyers, owners of student pilot licenses at the State University of Iowa, will begin training for their limited commercial pilot licenses February 1. Prof. H. Croft, coordinator for the CAA student training program here, announced.
Mrs. J M Fisher of Cedar Falls bequeaths $1,000 to Grinnell College under her will. The funds will establish the Mr and Mrs Irving M Fisher Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships.
A roomer used a long-bladed knife to threaten Herman Runyon, a Helping Hand mission clerk, demanding $36 from the cash register after claiming he was locked out of his room. Runyon said the man attempted to push him back into a room when the door was unlocked.
Des Moines Democratic National Committeeman Frank J. Comfort says O A Brandt will be replaced as state federal housing administrator. He notes Lester D. Drennen of Des Moines is recommended for the post, salary $5200 annually, with another candidate if not chosen.
A six ton truck loaded with 259 sacks of onions caught fire and was driven to Waterloo fire station where firefighters removed the onions. The blaze was caused by a small heater igniting the sacks, and the load was heavily damaged.
Burlington naval reserve unit sails for Seattle Washington to join the USS Brooks for neutrality patrol in the Pacific. Kansas City unit members will ride the train to Lincoln Nebraska to unite with the group.
London reports Britain pledges all possible aid to exiled Emperor Haile Selassie and Ethiopian rebels. Butler said the movement is growing as Royal Air Force and Allied forces press attacks in Libya Albania and near Bardia. German invasion fears rise amid food protests in London.
Hiram A. Morrow died at his Onarga home after months of illness aged about 77. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. R. C. Keagy officiating, then burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was brother of James Morrow and left Washington decades ago. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two grandchildren in Onarga, and sisters Mrs. Ella Crawford of Ainsworth and Mrs. Lottie McCulley of Tingley Iowa.
Des Moines reports the Iowa January draft quota set at 846 men, about half of the anticipated figure. Of the total, 659 will be inducted into the army at Fort Des Moines, with the remainder from rural Iowa towns to be inducted at centers in neighboring states.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion reports 110 members, led by Commander Howard P. Miller, surpassing the Washington quota of 85 and expected to rise further. Absent Adjutant George Baker due to a veterans hospital stay, dues may be paid to Miller or other officers. The post plans a joint county meeting in February with dignitaries invited, and two November selective service men from Washington County express thanks from Fort Snelling.

The Goodfellows fund moves ahead despite slim cash and food. Joe Holland says 75 more $1 gifts or 150 more 50 cent gifts could match last year’s distribution. Local supporters include Fortnightly Club and individuals. potatoes and canned goods added, about $120 needed. Contributions can be sent to Lee Holland at the State Bank or to the Evening Journal.
A Union Pacific passenger train struck the rear of a standing freight train at Union Station in Salt Lake City. The collision killed two crew members on the freight train, the conductor and a brakeman, who were in the caboose.
The Festicorn fund added forty one dollars today bringing total contributions to about eight hundred fifty dollars since the drive began. About half the prospective contributors have been seen and most interviewed donors have given. New gifts include Iowa Continental Telephone company twenty dollars Mc Cleery Calendar company fifteen dollars R L Lytle grocery five dollars and a friend one dollar. The drive pauses for holidays and will be reorganized after the new year to complete the campaign and settle all bills.
In a Cincinnati high school gymnasium Shirley Joan Hall, 15, suffered a fractured skull from a stairway fall but completed her role before dying the next morning. Funeral services were held after the accident reported Friday night.
On Friday at 2 PM the pupils of St James school present a Christmas program with plays, songs, readings, and a Christmas tale. Cast includes Mary Lou Barth Marie Vitte toe Barbara Peiffer and many others with Santa Claus to follow and gift exchange.
An explosion demolished a three story tenement and set fire to two adjoining buildings in Montreal. Two persons were believed killed and six injured as firefighters battled the blaze in cold weather. A soldier was seen entering the building and not seen again.
President Roosevelt vetoed the Walter Logan bill aimed at expanding court authority over federal agencies. The House failed to reach the two thirds needed to override, with 153 in favor and 128 supporting the veto. Roosevelt warned it would trigger chaos and endless litigation while urging action over arguments.
