Davenport Mrs Geneva Wacker sues for divorce claiming her husband Gilbert keeps the key on a chain and stores carpenter tools in their bed then sleeps on the floor, making life intolerable.
Council Bluffs reports a charge of larceny in the night against Joe Caton linked to the theft of 500 pounds of coal from a school near Clyde W. Spicer’s farm, the incident occurring before last week’s fatal shooting by Robert Carse the Oakland farmer.
Iowa's unemployment relief rose to 10,204 cases representing 37,422 persons in November per the Iowa emergency relief administration. October tallies reached 34,241 persons with Polk County reporting 1,431 cases and Woodbury County 1,082 cases.
DES MOINES Watts rural school in Allen township closed after teacher Hazel White caught mumps. More than half of the 19 pupils also had the disease, though White said her case was mild and she expects to reopen for a final week before Christmas vacation.
University of Iowa chemistry students, under Prof Edward Bartow and Dr F B Moreland, test sprayed fruit for adulterants and lead. Lead’s cumulative poisoning motivates this work to improve food safety and protect lives.
Ottumwa reports John F. Webber resigns after more than a year as assistant Wapello county attorney. He handled mainly criminal prosecutions for County Attorney FB J. Grier. No successor named. An amended petition remains in district court against the Federal Land Bank of Omaha and the Federal Farm Mortgage Corp., in a case Webber filed seeking about 2500 dollars in attorney fees.
Iowa City hosts the annual sorority relay carnival on January 12 to preview the Iowa backfield. Six football backs Floyd Dean Carl Mandin Bil Green Burdell Gilleard Ed McLain and Jack McKinnon will race 68 runners from 17 sorority and dormitory teams. Green and Gilleard are freshmen.
Des Moines records show lawmakers who served in the 1929 general assembly owe the state over 36000 in refunds and interest under the salary grab act. Only one $30 payment from Byron G. Allen has reduced the debt to 236.50. Allen was formerly a Pocahontas county representative.
Swiss President By right of succession Philip Elter becomes president of Switzerland for 1939. Switzer land chooses a new president each year from the federal assembly of seven members. The vice president automatically becomes president and a new vice president is named each year.
Rep Otha Wearin says the Des Moines harmony meeting will become a bitter inter party clash, urging that Governor Kraschel and not Birmingham invite the attendees. Senator Clyde Herring supports Wearin and says invitations should be extended to all party groups, not a chosen few. Background cites a Wallace for president boost and a looming 1940 convention.
New York authorities sought a mastermind behind the Phillip Musica alias F Donald Coster swindle. They say someone else directed the $86,000,000 McKesson Robbins fraud that Coster led before his suicide. Assistant U S Attorney Lester Dunnigan says the real brains remained at large. Coster lay in Fairfield Connecticut mortuary as brothers detained in federal custody on $100000 bonds.
Judge J. G. Patterson recessed the Washington court session and is expected to return next Friday for further work on the November term. Lena M. Netzer was granted a divorce from William H. Netzer amid several other pending divorce filings.
A district meeting of county committees of the soil conservation program will be held in Washington on Friday Dec 23 starting at 10 a.m. at the YMCA. About 100 men from 15 southeastern Iowa counties will attend with state committee members providing instruction on the federal farm program.
Benjamin 8 Kitchener a 58 year old German war veteran and US Army ex service man was arrested as a vagrant in Tucson Ariz and is being held for investigation in connection with a letter threatening to throw sulphuric acid in the eyes of President Roosevelt Handwriting in the letter resembled Kitchener's according to federal investigators.
Emil Daub received a head bruise and Dale Curl a skinned leg yesterday afternoon when Daub’s car collided with Kenneth Bedell’s Chicago car on the Brighton road five miles southwest of Washington near the Howard Miller home. The Bedell car was damaged about 300 dollars. other injuries were not serious.
Reports from Shanghai indicate the Yangtze River burst its banks causing widespread flooding. An estimated 300 square miles were inundated with thousands believed dead or missing across interior regions.
Vice President John Nance Garner arrives in Washington DC at age 70 after a long career. He says he will meet with President Franklin Roosevelt at the White House and attend the opening of Congress, signaling continued support despite private differences. He plans to lunch with the president soon.
Mrs. Sarah Ellen Knox widow of E. B. Knox and former resident died Thursday night at her daughter’s home in Los Angeles. She was 75 and had been ill six months. Survived by daughters Mamie Diller Nora Lowry and son Sherman Knox. Funeral services and burial will be in Los Angeles tomorrow.
State Senator A. Claire Dewey advocates a statewide speed limit for public highways in Iowa. He cites 24 states and the District of Columbia with limits and lists existing figures, endorsing 55 mph for Iowa and possible lower limits at night, while noting mixed public reaction.
Mrs. Rowland Rees and her grandson John Harold Jones visited in Columbus Junction. They spent Friday with Mrs. Rees' daughter Mrs. John Winga and her family.
James Franklin Moothart 78 died at his West Chester home last night after two years of ill health and ten days of illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at his home conducted by Rev. J. B. Pollock. burial in West Chester cemetery. Born August 6, 1860 in Pennsylvania, he moved to Cedar township with his family at age seven and spent most of his life in the area. He never married and was a carpenter by trade, member of Bagless lodge at Oskaloosa. Surviving brothers and sisters include Howard Moot hart of Marion, Mrs. Laura Stick of Chicago, Mrs. Sam DeLong of West Chester, and Gertrude Moothart, his caregiver. Arrangements by L. A. Jones funeral home.
