A West Twin Lakes trapper reported by a conservation officer caught two muskrats in a single trap one by the hind foot and one by the tail. The double catch was noted as a notable local wildlife incident in Rockwell City.
Madrid State bank depositors are receiving Christmas presents in the form of a final payment totaling 16 704 dollars at 8.83 percent, as the bank has now paid out 73.83 percent of deposits.
Des Moines reports that state parks will be turned into winter sports areas for skiing ice boating tobogganing and ice skating. Conservation officials urged caution to avoid thin ice on lakes and rivers.
A hound dog appeared before a justice of the peace in Boone without an attorney. The court ordered the animal turned over to the state conservation commission for punishment after it allegedly killed two deer in Ledges state park near Boone.
As hunting seasons for pheasants quail and migratory waterfowl opened a Des Moines conservation officer noted a spike in violations with 215 arrests in the last month. The most common offense was carrying a firearm in a motor vehicle on public highways without proper encasement.
A Des Moines county health official reports a total of 14 possible tularemia cases in the county. Dr. BR C. Sage says five cases are active while the others are under treatment awaiting symptom development.
Webster City Lawrence Abrahamson seven living near Jewell became a human torch after gasoline flames from a shed ignited when he opened the door. He fought for life in a hospital with a kidney complication and a 50-50 chance of recovery.
Ottumwa services will be held Saturday for John W. Fuller, Civil War veteran who died at his home. He was the last survivor of the Tuttle post of the Grand Army of the Republic and one of four veterans remaining in the city.
Des Moines reports the election contest by Democratic Secretary of State KA FE O'Brian could deny Guy Gillette the U S Senate seat if the Supreme Court accepts the challenge. O'Brian seeks to discard tallies from 24 voting machine counties, which would tilt the result toward L J Dickinson the Republican nominee.
Chamber of Commerce approves July 2 3 and 4 as the Washington town centennial celebration dates for 1929 with a three day program. A historical pageant Sunday July 2 and a major centennial event on Tuesday July 4 are planned, committee includes Downing Falk Warren. Directors McDaniel Ramseyer McFarlane re elected for two year terms. holdovers Winga Sherman Willits to serve.
Judge J. G. Patterson sentenced William Crandall to eight months in county jail for assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. Crandall posted 1500 appeal bond and gained release pending supreme court action as defense files appeal. In a separate matter, Stout vs Vesely papers were completed and Kinsley was fined 500 dollars for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Richard Hohl of the state motor vehicle department reports only about 125 of 485 truck drivers and chauffeurs in Washington County have renewed licenses for next year. If renewal is not completed by year end they must reexamine to obtain new licenses.
The Ottumwa Y M C A and the Y W A plan the eleventh annual New Year open house for Monday January 2 1959 with a Municipal band concert and recognition for members reaching fifteenth year. A swimming meet with Washington association is set for Saturday at 2:00 PM.
In Rome on December 16 a government decree requires Italian Jews to turn over property to a state special institute. Owners receive four percent bonds. large Jewish industries with over 100 employees will be state managed pending sale. Compensation via ordinary state bonds.
In Milan the Italian premier Mussolini via his newspaper called for territorial concessions in Tunis. He cited “the hour” to redeem the Italian section of Tunis, arguing it has been exploited by the French.
Christmas seal sales to date in Washington total 192.66, per Dr. C A Boice, county chairman. The figure covers only Washington town sales and excludes other towns and rural schools. With more reports coming in from schools, the total is expected to double after all reports arrive. The sale began Thanksgiving Day and runs through Christmas.
The first TB clinic run entirely by Washington county without state health aid was at Washington county hospital. Fifty patients were x rayed, pictures developed locally, and film costs covered by the county tuberculosis fund. Dr Boica led the x ray work with assistants Blanche Robertson Bertha Shelangoski and Mrs Ruth DeWitt.
Charles Beenblossom, 27, formerly at Lee Hunt market in Ainsworth, is hired by Cooperative Service Co of Washington as butcher and meat cutter for the new refrigeration locker plant on North Marion avenue. He will supervise the plant and meat cutting, replacing Charles A. Speer who resigned for a Wapel plant. Beenblossom, with years in the trade, will train three weeks at the Iowa City locker plant and start work at the local facility within weeks.
Joe Klopfenstein fell ill Wednesday at the Washington Oil service station. Reports in the Journal last evening named his son Lafe. Joe Klopfenstein’s condition remained about the same today.
Dean H H Kildee of Iowa State College told Washington Chamber of Commerce members and visiting farmers that urban rural cooperation strengthens communities. He cited Iowa farming as a business with 26 percent of Class A land and 40 percent of residents on farms and urged soil conservation and grass planting. He praised the 4 H movement and urged continued interdependence between town and country to solve shared problems. President Ramseyer presided. W J Roudabush introduced the speaker. Milo Sorden led song. Dr Botce spoke for TB Christmas Seal drive.
A delegation from Union county spent the day in Washington county examining hospital management practices. They reviewed records, indigent care handling, and administrative methods with hospital superintendent Dessa Shaw. Attending were directors from Creston and Kent, Shannon City, Lorimer, and Creston, plus Jennie Belle Meyer, O. E. Anderson, Rex Miller, and Dr. F. K. Sampson, originator of the Union county hospital.
New York reports Philip Musica also known as F Donald Coster killed himself in Fairfield Connecticut as arrest for looting 158 million from McKesson Robbins. Police say his brothers Dietrich and Vernard Maggie Musica linked. others unnamed sisters and a woman named Mrs. Carol Coster tied to a large brokerage account.
Peter Christiansen says his shell factory, damaged by a fire last Saturday, may relocate. He may tear down the East Seventh Street building on the Harry Knott property and rebuild elsewhere after his lease ends at year’s start. he has not chosen a new site yet.
Ruth Stewart leaves tonight for St Joseph Missouri to spend part of the holiday vacation with her fiancé Glen Duncan at the home of his parents.
