Wilbur Wilcox, 24, posted a $300 bond after a car he drove struck a parked vehicle and rammed the Ben Gratz grocery store in Ottumwa. Store frontage damage was estimated at $500.
Joy Hodges visits her mother Mrs Verne Hodges in Des Moines who is at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for treatment since November 26. Her condition is not regarded as serious.
Ole Johnson, 103, Iowa's oldest citizen, proved age by baptismal certificate and enjoyed a Christmas dinner hosted by his six daughters in Sioux Rapids. He received a new pipe as a stocking gift and has used the same tobacco brand for 52 years in a festive family gathering.
Frank Carter a 48 year old Des Moines grocer died of a heart attack following a fight at his home sparked by an argument over a bottle of beer. Don W. Wilson, 22, was arrested for investigation after admitting he fought Carter before the death according to Captain Paul Castelline.
Mason City readers stopped a sheriff's sale by raising over $1,000 from about 600 audience members for the $70,000 Radio chapel. Burroughs J. Waltrip, 35, an evangelist, urged support during three services to keep the church open.
Mylon Sachen, 12, of Mason City, coughed up nine marbles he swallowed as a baby. For five years they caused stomach aches and convulsions. Doctors failed to diagnose earlier. The last marble emerged Friday, followed by another convulsion and hospital x rays planned.
Six youths ride in a car that struck a bank near Buffalo Center. The vehicle vaulted about 26 feet. four occupants hospitalized with possibly serious injuries. Geraldine Smith, 16, daughter of the school superintendent, was identified as the driver. The group, mostly high school students, were on a Sunday outing.
Wickard director Claude R. Wickard of the AAA North Central area will discuss corn at the National Farm meeting Tuesday at noon over station.
Washington Lodge Will Ohland announces second degree work scheduled for Wednesday evening. Likely final degree session of the year with expected large attendance.
A $57,895 Public Works Administration check, 25 percent of total cost, arrives for two district grade school buildings. The district bears 55 percent, with 45 percent funded by the PWA. Construction progress continues despite a local carpenters strike ordered by outside union officials.
Mrs. Laura Wiles Fletcher, 72, died at home after a year and a half with stomach cancer. Funeral at Presbyterian church with Rev. Chapman. interment in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survived by her son Homer Menefee, grandson Walter Menefee, brother John Wiles, half siblings Owen Wiles, Mrs. Merrick and Mrs. Simpson. Fletcher and Menefee families long prominent in the county.
With a week before Christmas the Good Fellow committee reports $49.25 raised for needy families. E D Morrison Jr notes limited contributions despite last year’s $200 total as local businesses and individuals donate small amounts to fund Christmas baskets.
Cloyd Willits was chosen president of the Washington Chamber of Commerce for the coming year at a special board meeting. He has served on the board and will succeed Harry Ramseyer, who led the organization for two years. Frank McFarlane was elected vice president O E Schmitt secretary and Phil Welding treasurer.
Dr Arthur Atack and son visited grandson Bob Peters in Iowa City as he battles pleurisy. Mrs Atack visited her daughter in California while four-step children Delia Peters, Marie Ross, Grant Fletcher and Ruth Fletcher are noted. one half sister is deceased.
Berlin reports a two year deadline set by Nazi officials to liquidate Jewish immigration. The campaign includes mass deportation schemes and a barter proposal led by Dr. Hjalmar Schacht to trade refugees’ letters of credit for German goods. Schacht reportedly went to London to discuss the refugee issue with British figures.
Large crowds attended Christmas cantatas and programs at Davenport churches. The United Presbyterian Church choir directed by Carolyn Hamilton performed Bethlehem with local soloists and notable gifts to the choir and staff. Christian Church offered The Gift Supreme under Rev. Vernon Carter to about 150 attendees. Baptist Cantata The Everlasting Light received praise directed by Mrs. W. E. Bond and Mrs. Claude Reister. The Wooden Shoe musical drew many to the overflow area. Methodist music followed.
Ott Jackson bus sideswiped by a Centerville car about 7 10 this morning on a regular Washington Iowa City run north of the Rock Island Railway overpass near No 2 and 218 intersection east of Ainsworth. Damages about 150 each. No injuries. Bus to Washington for repairs. Henry Dukes rode northward leaving his car by the roadside. Bus driver J R Carris and passengers Elizabeth Clark Emily Havel Marian Woods and others, received transportation to destinations.
Peter Graber 86 died at his home four miles southwest of Wayland after a years illness. He was born in France July 15 1852 and came to the United States as a young man. He married Barbara Widmer who preceded him in death. Survivors include three adopted children Ben Roth Joe Graber and Noah Graber and one brother John Graber. Funeral at Sugar Creek Church with burial in Sugar Creek cemetery.
John G. Rogers of Oskaloosa, formerly of Keota, was fined fifty dollars and costs for reckless driving by Justice of the Peace B. Bovee. He was arrested by state highway patrolman Jack Eicher after allegedly speeding through Ainsworth at about 60 miles per hour. The arrest followed a suspension of a driving while intoxicated inquiry with a blood test failing to show intoxication.
The Board of Control asks for $13,464,020.92 for two years starting July 1 1939 to cover operating costs for 15 state institutions. It seeks $1,683,375 annually for a ten year capital program, and an increase of $1,443,554.46 annually over 1937 levels. The plan aims to reduce deficits and raise per patient daily costs toward a dollar.
With weeks remaining, county marriage licenses issued in 1988 stand at 148, up 25 from the full year 1937 total of 123. By December 19 last year 11 percent of licenses had been granted.
At the annual election for next year the Knights Templar Bethlehem commandery chose Brokhart as commander with Cloyce Gault named generalissimo and Russell Goodin captain general. Also elected were Roger Sherman junior warden Wisie Long junior warden A W Yard secretary and George McDaniel treasurer.
Election of church and Bible school officers occurred during the Christian church morning service. Elders named include C. A. Nicholson and Floyd Hunt among others. deacons listed with Wilmer Lauderman and Roy Brobst. Trustees, deaconesses, and officers for Bible school detailed with Nicholson as superintendent and Bessie Tucker as financial secretary.
