He noted evergreen trees cotton Santa beards decorations and wrappings are highly flammable and urged having a bucket of water ready and using nonflammable decorations and artificial snow available in stores.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday at Sherman’s funeral home for Thomas M Schilling by Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist church. A vocal solo was performed by Mrs Dintham Morrison. Burial followed at Woodlawn cemetery with pallbearers Ralph Junkin P G Ahrens Ode Ferguson Charles Caldwell Sam Miller and Griff Humphrey.
Washington ministers announce a week of prayer January 4 to January 10 at the Baptist church. Evening services begin at 7:30 with the theme The Gospel of God. Each night features a short sermon and special programs.
Dr. M. L. McCreedy of Brigh ton was elected president of the Washington County Medical Society at the annual election. Dr. F. M Mahin of Ainsworth became vice president and Dr. W. S. Kyle of Washington was re elected secretary and treasurer. Drs N. F. Masson Keith Droz and E. E. Stutsman of Washington were chosen for the board of censors. The application of Dr. F. M. Mast of Washington was accepted. The meeting was at the nurses home on the county hospital grounds with plans made for the coming year.
A Sunday evening event at the Y features a Messiah program with Christmas carols led by Mil an Thompson. The event invites everyone to attend.
The junior college stages its first Little Theater play of the year this evening at eight. The Christmas piece centers on the Whitney family with Daryl Fetters as the Tinker and a cast including Catherine Masson Roger Eicher Don Wheelan Lois Samson Louise Robinson and John Coulter. Tickets are thirty five cents at the door. student activity tickets accepted.
Washington county Dental Society met with eight members at the North Side cafe. After a Prosthetic Dentistry program in Dr. W D Dwyer’s office, officers elected were Dr B F Wheelan president Dr T J Pease vice president and Dr D D Davis secretary treasurer.
Des Moines Dec 17 The push to enact an Iowa unemployment compensation act before January faces an unprecedented jam as legislators prepare for a special session. The bill’s fate remains unsettled with the committee split and labor leaders warning no agreement exists. The session begins Monday and a ready bill is required for immediate consideration.
John Scherbring of Colesburg Iowa was arrested while picking up a decoy shoe-box and confessed to attempting to extort 35000 from Miss Vina Lovett. He admitted sending two notes signed The Black Legion on Nov 21 and Dec 11 claiming threats of death unless paid. He cited farm debt including an 8000 mortgage and 4000 other debts as motive.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Stout, born at the county hospital, died shortly after birth. The body was sent to Sherman’s funeral home. Burial occurred at Sandy Hook cemetery near Brighton this afternoon. Surviving are the parents and four siblings: Ralph, Franklin, Joyce Marie, and one more unnamed sibling.

Leona Korth, 238, of Sioux City, pleaded guilty to looting an apartment house and began a one year sentence at Anamosa reformatory. The plea and sentence were reported by INS-Leona Korth.
