The Cedar Rapids company announces payments on its preferred stock. The 7 percent preferred will receive 87 cents per share. The 6 percent preferred will pay 75 cents per share. Other figures include 8114 cents and 6 percent preferred 75 cents.
A subcommittee drafted a social security compliance bill proposing a 15 dollar weekly unemployment benefit. Benefits would start after a two week waiting period, run up to 26 weeks, with first payments on July 1 1938.
Dubuque milk customers still get supply as producers with the local cooperative refuse to sell for two days. The cooperative seeks a rise to 2.35 dollars per hundredweight from 1.90 to cover higher feed costs.

Mrs Harold Coppock, 36, mother of three, ended her life by gas in a church basement. Her body was found at the Baptist church after the stove gas jets were left open.
DES MOINES Police stopped Dean W. Haynes 28 and found a tin star and holstered gun. He told officers Meet your fellow officer Constable Haynes of Cumming and invited a bystander to join his prisoner for a meal. He was taken to headquarters and jailed.
ALGONA Frank Loss, a 65 year old farmer, credited a shepherd dog with saving his life after being gored by a bull at his brother Steve Lose's home. Loss suffered a broken collar bone, three broken ribs and internal injuries when the bull tossed him from a barn into a lot. The dog charged the bull, drawing its attention and allowing Loss to crawl free.
A letter from Edward Tallant, convicted for complicity in farmer Martin Wolz’s murder, claims Tony Thompson was framed. Tallant states he and Pan Hake fired the shots, with Thompson under a death sentence. the letter was forwarded to Governor Herring by Fort Madison penitentiary warden Glenn Haynes.
Dec 18. Mrs. Alex Miller secretary advocates making the state automobile department independent of her office or any other state office. Also noted: Mrs. J J McConnell, daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Smith, left for New York City to join her husband. he is an engineer there and they will live in New York.
Six men pleads guilty in Newton district court with two foregers sent to Anamosa reform school for up to ten years. Two others receive four to five months for drunken driving while two more are paroled from jail after illegal liquor possession. Also listed is Spencer Dooley jailed ten days for shoplifting.
Francis Allbaugh of Washington, a high school student, is hospitalized after a noon crash on Highway 2 near Ainsworth. He rode with David Ashby Don Messer and Lewis McFadden, all Washington students, when their car collided with a truck driven by Lloyd Lantz.
The junior college production The Tinker directed by Miss Opal Keeney drew a large audience for Christmas. The family drama centers on the Whitneys who chase wealth at the expense of simple companionship, as clock repairman Tinker and news of a will reshape their values.

Spanish rebel shells from the cruiser Espana missed direct contact with the US cruiser Erie by about 300 yards off the northern Spanish coast. The Erie raised the American colors and departed after the incident as officials in Washington said no action would be taken on the report.
Dale Atkinson Tom Dodd and Everette Burham of Washington visited Columbus Junction to map plans for the annual reunion of Company K veterans. The event will be January 15 in Leeton Hall with a catfish supper by Bil Knott and invitations mailed to all members.
Salt Lake City December 18. Twenty four airplanes and 40 observers joined a wide search for the missing Western Air Express airliner with two women and five men aboard.
George McKeever of Allerton Iowa was executed today on a makeshift gallows near Fulton Missouri, witnessed by the widow of Ben Booth whom McKeever had killed on June 14, 1933 after Booth and Sheriff Wilton stopped him for questioning.
