Mrs. Lester Kelter of Ackworth and Duane Judkins of Indianola were involved in a head on collision after Kelter failed to see a dog in the road. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and no injuries are reported.
Spencer mayor E Golly opposed and vetoed the sale of a new power turbine and condenser at the Spencer municipal light plant. He refused to sign contracts with General Electric Co and Elliott Co despite their bids for the equipment.
Ben S. Summerwill, examiner in charge, said Iowa City receivership will pay a 10 percent disbursement totaling $75,850. Other bank receiverships are completing payments totaling more than $87,000.
Shenandoah report notes Mrs. Minnie Rae, a 5% Shenandoah housewife, went downtown this holiday season to have her photograph taken at her children's request. She cites no special reason for the unusual visit.
Sioux City report states Helen Pazawich 22 a Morningside College graduate took her own life by gas inhalation one month after her mother committed the same act Mags Pazawich taught school at Bronson until her daughter's death She graduated from Morningside in June 1935 and was president of Alpha Sigma sorority during senior year.
Iowa City professor Edward Bartow head of the University of Iowa chemistry department will retire as president of the American Chemical Society on January 1. He has led the organization of 20 000 members and been among the few Midwesterners to hold the post.
Muscatine cancer clinic owner Norman G. Baker must serve one day in jail and pay a 50 fine for contempt of court. The Iowa Supreme Court ordered the penalty after Baker violated an injunction prohibiting practicing medicine in Iowa without a license, with Baker reportedly located in Mexico where he runs a radio station.
Leon Five miners spent six hours trapped in the Decatur County Coal Co shaft before being pulled to the surface exhausted but unhurt. A crew of 49 men worked all afternoon to free the trapped workers from their 2740 foot underground confinement.
Emmetsburg reports 12 year old Boyd Anderson son of Andrew Anderson vanished from home while on the way to school. Officers fear foul play as the boy left without his savings or belongings. Local meat market employee father referenced.
New Hampton depot cashier Sam Sehlappi and tower operator Kilmer Koenig knew five minutes before a wreck at Fredericksburg that the passenger and freight trains would collide. Conductor Joe Murray alerted the dispatcher and confirmed the altered train order, noting the passenger had just passed and would meet two freights at Fredericksburg.
A Western Air Express plane with seven aboard vanished after a crisp broadcast that all was well. Fog over the eastern shore delayed air search. ground methods and canyon searches were active as crews awaited clearing skies.

Governor Herring orders a ten o'clock Monday opening for a special legislative session limited to enacting laws to comply with federal security requirements. He cites a latte statute granting power to limit business. opening date moved from Saturday December 26 to Monday December 21 after Iowa Democratic leaders’ conference.
Formal charges accuse President Glenn Frank of policy vacillation and neglect of duties while absent from the state. The charges, brought before the Wisconsin State University board of regents, were supported by a prominent supporter of Governor Philip La Follette.

On December 16 the insurgents pressed a major offensive around Madrid aiming to encircle the capital before Christmas. They claimed to have captured the town of seven miles northwest of Madrid as loyalist forces fought to prevent a breakthrough.
Rebels launch a strong attack at Valde Merillo near the Escorial in an effort to cut off loyalist forces guarding Madrid from the northwest. Gen Francisco Franco vows a festive triumph in Madrid, but loyalist resistance appears firm.
About two hundred educators gathered for a six o’clock dinner and a 4 meeting of the Southeast Iowa school administrators. Supt. Clark Brown led, with A J Naumann urging annuities for teachers, while Dr K T Peterson urged state aid and fair fund allocation to prevent disparities among districts.
In Ferguson Iowa two Newton men L B Thompson 38 and Ernest Bill Laird 35 died instantly when their car collided with a train at a grade crossing. The wreckage flew over 100 feet. Coroner R R Hauperth is investigating. Thompson was a grocer and Laird a salesman.
A large chorus of over sixty voices under Miss Carolyn Hamilton rehearses Handel's Messiah weekly for a Christmas season presentation on Sunday evening December 20 at 7 30 at the Methodist church. The last rehearsal is tonight at 8 15 with several soloists expected to attend. Mr and Mrs W B Kerr depart for San Clemente California to spend winter with their daughter Mrs Russell Manning.
