The Cherokee Congregational church, dissolved years ago, approved bequests totaling 6700 to several groups and projects. The principal gift of 3000 funds a Cherokee band shell, with the city required to match that amount before January 1, 1940.
All churches in Washington schedule Christmas week events including cantatas and children's programs. The Baptists present The Everlasting Light on Sunday at 10 45 a m and The Miracle of the Wooden Shoe in the evening. United Presbyterian perform Bethlehem by Maunder Sunday at 4 p m. Other churches host Christmas music and pageants December 18 22 23 and 25 with soloists from Davenport and local directors guiding choirs and students. A detailed program list and church school party are announced for December 22 23 and 25 with multiple performances.
Monona Lavonne Schmelzer, a rural school teacher near Monona, recalls all fourteen pupils. The class are children of three Levenhagen brothers Chris Fred and Paul. Helen Charles Mary Lou Margie Frederick Gayhart Mary Florence Ruth Lovina Betty Jean Charlie Donald and Robert are listed.
Firefighters were called to the home of J. Ty Smith, football coach at the public high school in Fort Madison. Screens near the furnace started the blaze in the basement. Mrs. Smith rang for help, but Smith tossed the goldfish bowl into the flames. The fire was extinguished but two goldfish died.
Lew E. Wallace returns to active post on Iowa motor vehicle commission after a year and a half leave. Secretary of State Robert E K O'Brian ordered the return noting the statute requires the commissioner to personally handle moneys and equipment.
Mrs C W Jones heard her own funeral service at the Methodist church after Rev O J Fis of Burlington, formerly Moravia, preached thinking he was honoring Mrs Jones. He learned of the error only after viewing the body at the service’s close.
Ralph A. Oliver of Sioux City was sworn in as the first Republican justice on the Iowa Supreme Court after the Navy 8 election. Governor Kraschel signed the election certificate and the court action against Oliver was dismissed. Oliver assumed the bench immediately.
Des Moines Iowa conservation commission ended the post of Harry M Sanderson chief of its administrative division effective January 1 He had not been at his desk since late last week and was among three employees ousted September 15 1937 The commission later reversed action against Sanderson and one other employee on November 7 1937
W A Sheaffer retires from the presidency of the W A Sheaffer Pen Co after a 25 year tenure. He will stay on as chairman of the board while son Craig Sheaffer becomes president and H E Waldron remains vice president and general sales manager. G A Beck is elected treasurer and W A Scherfe continues as secretary.
A Friday evening program on December 23 directed by Helen Sage features the Welcome by Wilda Jean Chorpen ing and a sequence of recitations songs and exercises by Mildred Chorpenning J Dona Mundt Barbara Hampton Mary Stevens Donald Kuntz and other youth groups. The event includes performances of Joyful Christmas pieces Why Do We Have Christmas Day Away In a Manger Follow the Star We Love Christmas and a Christmas drama My Mother's Bible presented by The Young People.
A church service titled Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained features openings by A C Mueller and Gladys Vinton. It includes congregational hymns and child performances with readings from Genesis and Luke, songs by primary and intermediate groups, and recitations detailing the nativity story.
Laird Hawkins of Ainsworth was sentenced to three months in the county jail after a conviction for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. An appeal to the Iowa supreme court was filed and an appeal bond posted, Hawkins released pending the higher court action. The trial then resumed in Stout vs Vesely over a deed to a farm from Vesely to his son James, expected to span several days.
Cold spell grips region with temperatures ranging from 32 degrees yesterday afternoon to ten degrees above zero last night. Officials urge warm clothing and caution on icy roads as the area endures another winter snap.
District commander opened with a brief talk then Horace Hurley from Iowa City delivered a vivid blooming bloody story in English. The audience roared with laughter as Ben Nichols was absent. Horak's orchestra accompanied a post talk dance while a sandwiches and coffee lunch was served. The next county meeting will be held in Kalonma on a later announced date.
Iowa lawmakers adopted a sweeping interim committee report urging to reduce overcrowding at insane and epileptic hospitals by transferring patients and possibly building new facilities or new units. The plan also calls for a state office building, notes penal institutions are less crowded, and highlights needs at the state university library, state college women’s gym, and state teachers’ college hospital.
The Y. W. C. A. asks donors to bring toys for the Christmas tree by Saturday forenoon. Volunteers will repair and repaint toys Saturday afternoon. The annual Christmas party is next Thursday December 22 at 4 p.m.
Berlin December 15 The German Reich treasury swelled by 250 million marks about 100 million dollars as German Jews completed payment of the first of four levies totaling 400 million dollars in fines.
The Rev. E. A. Piper, pastor of the English Lutheran church in Webster City for the last 15 years, has accepted a call to First Evangelical Lutheran church at Fairfield.
The county home hosted a Christmas program on Friday at seven p.m. led by Rev. Arthur Atack of the Washington Methodist church. County home steward R. D. Van Dorin urged a large public turnout and noted gifts may be left at McDaniel drug store for residents.
Washington retail stores will begin evening hours starting next Tuesday and continuing until Christmas. Secretary C. E. Schmitt of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announced the plan to help workers shop after hours for Christmas gifts.
Contributions received in this morning's mail bring the Good Fellow total to 20 dollars, about half of last year's amount at the same time. E D Morrison Jr, chairman, voices worry as Christmas nears. Iowa shows 946 applications this year with 1,489 still on hand plus 36 allocated. total Iowa requests since start 1,525. Loans run 40 years at 3 percent interest, requiring documented farm and home plans.
The Iowa Commerce Commission announces an indefinite postponement of the December 20 hearing at its Des Moines offices. The delay concerns a complaint by the legislative board of the order of railway conductors alleging that removing a brakeman from the Chicago Great Western passenger train between Des Moines and Oelwein could impair passenger safety.
Washington county reports 1779 Red Cross members for the coming year the largest since world war times. County towns lead growth with many new workers and 100 percent in several districts. Gifts totaling 3 dollars from local clubs and lodges accompany the tally.
Three district court judges were appointed to hear the election contest filed by Secretary of State Robert E. O'Brian against John F. Wessels. The panel must set a hearing date within 20 days, with latest possible Jan. 8. O'Brian seeks to void Wessels election claiming machine voting in 24 precincts affected the result.
A $120000 blaze in Des Moines hit the Globe department store during a closing sale tied up traffic and delayed hundreds of workers. The old three story brick structure burned, then spread to the new addition before firefighters contained it by 8 AM. The night watchman, trapped in the basement, was rescued via a rear alley manhole. The Interstate Department Stores of New York planned to operate the Boston store beginning January.
Franklin Kinsley, discharged from the county hospital, faced a warrant for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Chief Jay Brown and Sheriff H M Putnam escorted him to Justice J E Bovee, where he waived preliminary hearing and was ordered held to district court in 1000 dollars bond. The Dec 8 crash on East Main Street injured Ernest White, Dorothy Denison, and others.
Washington December 15. America’s former WWI allies who borrowed billions from the United States sent their usual polite regrets that they again find it impossible to pay any portion of their war debts.
Sid ney J Williams of the United States safety council urged creation of a motor vehicle department independent of the secretary of state’s office to the state highway safety council. He praised Iowa traffic laws as outstanding. The report also notes local residents shopping in Ames, including Bill Bloom Edith Weldin and several couples from Wellman Brighton and Keota.
O'Brian was appointed in January 1937 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mrs. Alex Miller of Washington. He will serve only until the general election this year.
