ISU to refund on gas bills

Iowa Southern Utilities Co. will refund a portion of a rate increase disallowed by the FPC, crediting about $120,700 to customers and averaging $10.50 for residential space heating. The one month credit appears on bills after December 23 and accompanies a separate cost increase. DeHoet urged conservation and insulation as natural gas costs trend upward amid dwindling supplies.

Court orders release of juror names in Jacoby case

The Town Players present Godspell at Kalona Recreation Center on Monday and Tuesday December 27 and 28 at 8 pm. Supreme Court rules pay for prison chaplains legal

The Iowa Supreme Court in a 7-2 decision upheld state salaries for chaplains at the Iowa State Penitentiary. The ruling reversed a Lee County District Court finding that payments violated the Iowa Constitution and First Amendment concerns. Justices said aiding inmates' religious exercise is permissible and that government neutrality toward religion is maintained. Dissenters argued tax funds should not fund chaplains. Prior payroll totaled 25,000 in annual salaries for two full-time and 216 a month for a part-time chaplain.

Bomb blast at Baghdad airport kills and wounds many

A suitcase timed bomb exploded in Baghdad International Airport customs hall killing at least three and injuring hundreds. Mid-Prairie approves 2.25 million bond for schools

Mid-Prairie Community School District voters authorize a 2,250,000 bond for construction and repairs to district buildings. Thieves hit Wayland in busy Tuesday night

Thieves robbed the J.B. Magdefray building for about 110 dollars after entering through a side door of the Boshart and Hansen Insurance office. An attempted break-in at Ed's Super Value failed. Cash was taken from Karen's Corner, the Wayland News desk, Jim's Barbershop, and a utility drawer, with the break-in discovered at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday as J.B. Magdefrau arrived. Police and Henry County authorities investigate.

Two Men Held After Meat Truck Threat Report

Washington County sheriff's officers held two men Eugene Englebrech and Immanuel Cervantes after a complaint of threats to rob a meat truck driver. The men were arrested at highways 92 and 218 east of Ainsworth, a suitcase was recovered near the cafe at 218, and Cervantes claims Mexican extraction and no English. Authorities continue checks with other law enforcement.

Fourth hidden arsenal found in Southern California

In Wrightwood a half track and a pickup loaded with machine guns and ammo were uncovered in a cabin, the latest in a series of arsenals found across the region. Authorities connect the caches to a possible racist paramilitary group. weapons include missiles, mortars, bazookas, dynamite, napalm precursors, and hand grenades. Wiggins arraigned on illegal weapon counts, bail reduced, handwriting samples ordered.

Iowa panel limits roadside herbicide spraying
