Fr. Madison The W. A. Shaeffer Pen Co. distributed a bonus of $80,000 to more than 1,000 employees including officers. It marks the largest bonus ever awarded by the local company.
Marshalltown officials say the council suspended rules at the last meeting to pass the regular appropriations ordinance that had been missed last spring, completing the oversight.
Council Bluffs charged with assault and battery upon James McDaniel involved Owen Witthauer who was released after a hearing before Municipal Judge Harry L. Robertson. The judge ruled Witthauer was legally in his rights ejecting McDaniel from the Witthauer premises after McDaniel escorted his daughter Marjorie Witthauver home from a movie theater.
In Centerville a $10,000 swimming pool bond issue failed twice before passing by 842 to 403 in a second special election despite bad weather. The measure now allows a $52,000 improvement with federal aid after not reaching the 60 percent threshold in the prior election by two votes. Navy 15 carried in the outcome.
Police in Council Bluffs search for a geoft spoken robber about 600 who forced clerk Alfred Spearn at the Boedecker store to surrender $30 at gunpoint. He vanished before Gerald Holt, manager of Harry Darrell, and a brother, learned of the crime inside the shop.
Odessa May Dingle, 3, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Dingle, was taken to Ottumwa hospital after swallowing an open safety pin. X rays showed the pin in her stomach. she was sent home with doctors awaiting further developments before treatment.
Edward Jack Rogers a 19 year old known as a knight of the road or hobo faced a 30 day sentence after striking a local policeman. He complained he disliked being called a bum and said he would leave town per the judge’s order.
Ottumwa detectives halted Vernon Terrill and J. G. Stennett after a train quarrel. Paroled from Fort Madison penitentiary that morning, they were jailed for intoxication and disturbing the peace. Terrill headed for Sioux City and Stennett for Shenandoah per papers on them.
More than 85 percent of the topsoil on Crawford county farms is gone according to a survey by the agricultural conservation committee. The survey follows a training school where men were instructed to visit every farm, classify fields by slope erosion soil type and productivity.

A list of twelve grand jurors was drawn at the courthouse and announced today to serve during 1938. They will report for each of the four terms in January March September and November with seven jurors per term. Rodney Arnold of the American Legion skating rink committee appeals to boys to stop throwing sticks elods and tin cans on the South Fourth Avenue lot prepared for a public rink. Such objects roughen the surface for skaters and for those who will use the rink in cold weather. Street workers have watered the lot daily and several skaters tried it out on Sunday.
Secretary Leigh Soule announces a two week holiday schedule at the Y M C A starting Monday Dec 20. Activities include youth basketball practices and free throw contests for various grade levels, a juniors league, high school age leagues, swimming, ping pong, and outdoor hikes and games with sign ups at the desk.
In a session at the Iowa Penitentiary the state board of parole released twenty nine convicts on parole granting clemency and releasing inmates into the public under supervision.

The price range cited spanned 500 million to 1 billion dollars with continued parity payment debates on cotton, wheat, and corn.
Trustees for creditors of the Washington National Bank announce a 10 percent dividend payable December 17, 1937. About 36 0000 will be distributed among 2 500 accounts, with checks issued at The National Bank of Washington. Creditors must bring participation certificates to receive their checks.
Firemen reported a blaze in the Swift packing plant Clinton Iowa started in the feather room and caused about 75000 dollars in damage. Slippery streets hindered fighting the fire but it was put under control. 235000 pounds of feathers worth six dollars per hundred pounds were ruined. Manager Byron Kubns blamed spontaneous combustion and work was expected to resume normally.
