Connie Block and Darlene Rhoades, two of the victims in the Mason City crash that killed ten, have been discharged from a Mason City hospital eight weeks after the train-school bus disaster and are back at home recovering.
Glenwood announces a $100 fine or 0 day jail for grocerymen who open stores on Sundays. An additional ordinance requires pool halls to close at 11 45 p m on Saturdays and remain closed Sundays.
Samuel Shafer, 98, pioneer resident of Cedar Rapids since 1856 after walking from Muscatine, died. Civil War veteran captured and imprisoned at Andersonville during the conflict.
Le Mars Iowa prisoner Clitus Lorenz Justi 55 Kingsley used a knife hidden in his shoe to slit his throat while facing an insanity hearing. He was reported in serious condition from blood loss while jailed on suspicion of threatening to kill his family.
A drizzle has fallen most of the day freezing on contact, leaving sidewalks and streets slicker than yesterday. People stay indoors and nonessential travel is postponed as icy conditions make walking and driving hazardous with no serious local accidents reported yet.
W A Anderson of Clinton former banker was in Washington on business connected with enterprises he heads. He welcomed a federal court ruling by Judge Charles A Dewey in Des Moines that 15 of 31 counts be struck from the indictment, with trial not set until next April.
Justice James M. Parsons of the Iowa Supreme Court, hospitalized in Des Moines, shows slight improvement but remains critically ill.
Former Judge Eugene McQuillin of St Louis Missouri died Friday after a four day illness. The cousin of Mrs A Anderson of Washington he was 75 and a leading authority on municipal law. Surviving are two brothers and one sister.
Fifty jurors for the January term of district court were drawn at the courthouse by clerk R R Noonan. The term opens Monday January 10 with Judge J G Patterson presiding. Jurors listed include Lloyd Alliman, Mary Atchison, Ida Bateman and many others from Washington, Wellman, Oregon, Crawford and surrounding areas.
Inheritance taxes of 2896 dollars were paid on the 29966 dollar taxable estate of Joel J. Swartzendruber of Kalona, Iowa, according to Des Moines dispatch. The report notes the tax was remitted December 14.
Washington Goodfellows face a shortfall with only 11 dollars raised toward the Christmas fund. Sixty donation containers have been placed citywide as the Y M C A and Y's Men prepare for potential needs, hoping for more contributions to cover hundreds of meals and a proper holiday dinner for local families.
A fire yesterday afternoon at Red Brick school, two miles south of town, forced a temporary closure as the building undergoes repairs and insurance adjustments. The Iowa Supreme Court reversed a Washington county verdict and held that Jessie Creiger is not entitled to workers compensation for her husband’s death on June 13, 1986. She sued Mustaba Investment Co and Central Surety Co under the workers compensation law. Her husband was a repair man on farms owned by Mustaba Investment.
A fire damaged the school floor and interior smoke exposure while the furnace remained intact. The district avoided higher losses by fire occurring during classes, not at night, and by Mutual and Washington firemen using an on board water supply. John Custer drove the Mutual truck crew.
Early plans outline the tenth annual New Year reception at the Y M C A with Y W C A guests. Committees named by President John Winga include Cloud Willits as reception chairman, checkers tournament leads Serel Taylor and R F E Brown, stamp exhibit John Applegate, and camera exhibit Melvin Gingerich. Activities include volleyball, basketball, swimming exhibition, music by the Washington Municipal Band, refreshments by the Y W C A, and registration by Charles Davis.
County corns sealers report the corn placed under federal loan seals averages 16 percent moisture. Cribs range from 14 to 17 percent, with about 25 cribs sealed in the county. Wayne Norman, county treasurer, notes the figures as observations from the soil conservation office.
C A Brandsfield of Des Moines died after a railroad speeder collided with a car driven by R B Burns of Des Moines on Highway 77 north of Wellman and Kinross. T J Butler of Davenport was injured. Burns was lightly hurt. An inquest was held at Marsh funeral home.

Iowa Tuberculosis association reports a 15 percent rise in the 1937 Christmas Seal sales from 32 communities, totaling $17 567.15 versus $15 288.34 in 1936. Mason City leads with a 238 percent jump. Des Moines and others show notable gains. Officials aim for a statewide $100 000 goal for early case discovery and preventive programs, with similar national increases expected.
