Dr DOW Morehouse, president of Drake University in Des Moines, remained in critical condition after a relapse requiring oxygen. He had been stricken with pneumonia about a month ago and had shown recent improvement before the relapse.
Day & Zimmermann field staff leads topographical survey of about 50 crew members and 17 draftsmen covering 20000 acres south and west of Burlington for a nearly 50 million dollar government munition plant. Major Lowry oversees war department office with A Guthrie Co and Johnson Co in charge of building contract. rail switches planned to start material flow.
In Fort Dodge Wanda Joyce Hicke and Delvera Uyde celebrated their thirteenth birthdays on the date said to be unlucky. Delvera called 13 her lucky number while the sisters marked the occasion with cheer.
H. H. Leach of Fort Dodge left his Springer Spaniel valued at 50 dollars in a car in Dubuque to guard the contents during a business call. Upon return the car was found intact but the dog had been stolen.
Fort Defiance State Park caretaker Eugene Harrison says the slide is set up and weather is cold enough. He notes that a little more snow will perfect conditions and once snow arrives, the runway bed will be completed and the opening date announced.
W. G. Kimmel, 44, history instructor at the State University of Iowa, died at his home of a heart attack. He had previously served as assistant principal in Pennsylvania. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. C. C. Kimmel of Carlisle, Penn. Kimmel joined the faculty last summer.
Mayor Samuel G. Brenner announced Muscatine city hall would not be opened for Sunday meetings. Jehovahs Witnesses had asked to use the hall for a Sunday gathering but the request was denied due to policy.
More than 300 Grinnell College students petition President S. N. Stevens to wait years for a new fieldhouse rather than accept a makeshift facility. The petition will also go to the college board of trustees at the winter meeting. Stevens announced plans for a $75,000 physical education center for men using the stadium wall as part of the construction.
Des Moines report of a federal court case in Omaha Nebraska charging Russell Daniel former head of the Iowa Nebraska South Dakota Secret Service district prosecutes a man accused of selling 100 slug copies to a federal agent. The slugs resemble nickels in color weight and size and are allegedly counterfeit money.
In the Pfeiffer will from New York City, religious and educational groups receive most of the nearly 2 million in public bequests. The estate totals $2,849,379 net with $50,000 left to Cornell College in Mount Vernon and North Central College in Naperville.
George T. Baker of Davenport Iowa dies in Paso Texas after a brief illness at age 83. He served as president of Iowa’s state board of education for fifteen years resigning due to ill health and later lived in New Mexico with his daughter. Baker made a fortune in railway construction and helped Iowa boys obtain an education. He was Davenport mayor 1890 to 1900 and served in the Iowa legislature after being elected in 1890.
Word reached here of the sudden heart attack death of Mrs. Edna Taylor wife of Dr. Fred Taylor at their Lewistown home Montana She was about 48 years old and widens 25 years since marriage to the Montana community She leaves one daughter Roberta a state university student in Iowa City and sisters Mrs George Brinton and Mrs Fred Mauthe notifyher.
Senator Gerald Nye of South Dakota and Margaret Johnson of Iowa Falls will marry at five this afternoon in the English Lutheran church in Iowa Falls. Best man is William Stearn of Fargo and maid of honor is Eileen Lillis of Hammond Indiana.
Health officials plan to publish grades for all milk distributors after the new year. Grade labels on bottle caps will warn of noncompliance, with Grade A reserved for properly produced milk and Grades B C or D indicating deficiencies.
A fatal oil tank blaze at a Texas City refinery killed one worker and injured 18 others as flames swept across three tanks. Four men suffered severe burns from boiling oil and were hospitalized, with the incident threatening the facility.
Wreckage of one of three Canadian air force planes from Camp Borden Ont was found in a swamp three miles from the camp. The pilot's body was found nearby. The plane had been missing since Thursday during a regular training flight.
The War Department ordered mobilization of 28 739 regular army reserve corps members by February 15. Those without dependents will be called in installments across nine army area commands. Reservists with dependents or key industry roles will be discharged. The reserve, formed in 1938, includes men honorably discharged from the regular army who volunteered for four years and can be recalled in an emergency.
Early today a smoke odor alerted firemen to the New England apartments on East Washington street. An overheated furnace triggered a cautionary response, with the blaze quickly controlled and only minor damage reported.
Secretary O. E. Schmitt of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announced stores in Washington will open in the evenings from next Wednesday through Christmas. The shops will be open every evening except Sunday to aid shoppers who cannot visit during daylight hours.

Lieutenant Colonel Captain W G Eldridge stated today that an Army and Navy Journal notice lists Major Paul Putnam as up for early promotion to lieutenant colonel in the marine air corps. Major Putnam is the son of A K Putnam and brother of Sheriff Harold M Putnam and Clyde Putnam of Washington.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill reported that all but two of Washington county's rural teachers were present at yesterday's country teachers institute held at the courthouse. Washington high school's normal training students and instructor C. A. Wullerton, a longtime rural music expert now near 80, attended and drove his car to the meeting.
The Methodist church will host its second annual Candlelight service on Sunday December 22 at 7:00 p.m. The traditional service features scripture readings from Matthew and Luke read by Wendell Baker, with twenty carols, Messiah selections, and solos. Angels of Light will lead a procession of groups representing church and community members. Attendees receive candles to carry home for Christmas Eve, symbolizing the Christ child’s birth in the home. Mrs. A E Baldrige chairs the event.

Home bread costs 4 to 5 cents per pound vs bakers’ 7 to 10 cents. homemakers spend about 5% of their time monthly, saving roughly $1.80, about 33 cents per hour. Bakers’ bread rated better by experts though nutritionally similar. branded loafs richer in minerals, homemade higher in fat.
A second major fire in Romania's oil fields in six days stopped all railway traffic on the Bucharest line to Germany Poland and Russia. The line may remain shut for days as heavy snow affects the Black Sea coast and the Danube may freeze soon.

Mrs. John Turner 61 died last evening at Washington county hospital after illness with diabetes. Funeral services set for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at home and 2 p.m. at Coppock Christian church with Rev. Donald Nickerson and Rev. L. Johnson officiating. Burial in Sehrock cemetery. She was born Sept 15 1879 in Jefferson county and survived by her husband eight children eleven grandchildren a brother and a sister.
