While rabbit hunting near Onawa, Billy Scurlock injured his left index finger when a gun discharged in a corn field. The accident occurred last week and left him without his finger.
The Monona County Conservation club holds its third annual buffalo feed at Soldier, Iowa on January 10. The meal uses buffalo ordered from a South Dakota state park and will be served with assistance from Moorhead CCC camp boys.
A regional NLRB hearing will consider union representation for LaPlante Choate Manufacturing Co. employees after a petition filed by United Farm Equipment Workers Organizing Committee Local (CIO). The American Federation of Labor affiliated Machinists union is also involved in the case. The plant makes road machinery in Cedar Rapids.
Louis Kling, Jasper county supervisor, endures sorrow as twin sons of his son Henry Kling die a day apart. Henry Kling sprains his ankle en route to the hospital and is on crutches. George Kling, 18, Iowa State College student, was rushed home for an emergency appendicitis operation with a stable condition Sunday.
Iowa State College fraternity members invite 140 Ames needy children from relief rolls to a Christmas party. Local magician entertained with magic eyes and coins while Prof Tolbert MacRae led singing. Children enjoyed candy boxes and supper with ISU’s 890 Greeks.
Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs abandons inter-school football citing a small candidate pool. Superintendent Lloyd Berg says inter-squad play will continue and hopes football may restart with external competition someday.
Six of Iowa eleven presidential electors met to certify electoral votes for Wendell Willkie. Five were prevented by bad weather from signing the certificate, which will be sent to Washington by January 3. Six present chose five substitute electors under Iowa law. certificate signed in Governor Wilson's office.
A winter storm brought freezing rain turning to ice across Washington county causing downed tree limbs and damaged wires. Utilities crews worked through Sunday night to clear slush and restore lines as outages affected towns served by Iowa Southern Utilities. Continued reports of damage followed into the morning with several crews kept on duty to maintain service.
Don Radda dominated the WHO sponsored corn show at Fort Des Moines hotel lobby winning sweepstakes and multiple departments. He claimed the tallest stalk at 23 feet 10 inches and reinforced Washington county as the corn growing center of the world.
A sideswiping collision on primary road No 1 about nine pm Saturday left several injured. Floyd Baumert of Keota drove a pickup. Gene Nicholson of Washington drove a car. Damage about 125 dollars. Nicholson suffered a head bump and facial injuries. others in the car had cuts and bruises. Marie Payne 17 of Wayland had a head cut, Kathryn Ferguson and Katherine Welcher of Kalona were injured. Wayne Durst 19 of Washington received treatment at Washington county hospital for cuts and bruises.
Don Radda repeated as top exhibitor at the Festcorn show in Washington, earning a life-size gold ear trophy on a gold ash-tray base for the best display. His three-car entry captured the grand championship, with wins in the Pioneer 307 division and other divisions. Jim Havel Jr. of Ainsworth took third in the longest year contest, while Washington County's corn champion attended the event all day, with coverage by Herb Plambeeck of WHO.
Orville Johnson of Moulton reports a strange windfall last week, adding $15 to his pocketbook after he ran over a wolf with his ear. In the same county residents add a $10 bonus for each wolf killed, atop the regular $5 payment.
United Press reports Britain and Greece delivered heavy blows to Italy today, with five direct hits on Naples warships and a raid by RAF bombers, mirroring the Taranto damage. British forces pushed well past the Libyan border while Italy holds Sollum, with Greek forces advancing in Chimar and Tepelini on the Albanian front.
State Patrolman Ben Bentzinger reported seven licenses granted to drivers from Washington BE Kalona Wellman Ainsworth Brighton Pleasant Plain and Keota. Two failed and were refused. One new chauffeur license went to Milo Times of Keota. Ninety nine chauffeurs renewed for the new year.
WAPELLO Dec. 16 Officials investigated a two train wreck on the Rock Island lines in which twenty persons were injured none critically. A northbound St Louis train hit the rear of a southbound Minneapolis train as it entered a siding. The northbound engine derailed and lay on its side. Injured include engineer Ed Ludawig and fireman J B Radebaugh Cedar Rapids and Mrs Helen Bandy Keota with multiple injuries. First aid given at the depot.
Fire at the Fred Neiswanger building began in the basement near the coal bin and spread to the first story, prompting six water streams and two hours of firefighting. Insurance will fund rebuilding after adjusters inspect the site.
William S. Knudsen, production chief of the National Defense Commission, dispatches letters to top manufacturers urging speedier delivery of machine tools due to urgent wartime needs. President Roosevelt heads to Washington amid talks of an unlimited emergency to accelerate armament.
Mellie Hawkins died at 11 15 Sunday morning at her home 907 South Avenue B after a long illness from a stroke three years ago She was born July 6 1878 near Birmingham Iowa She married William Hawkins Feb 22 1893 and lived on farms near Birmingham Libertyville and Washington She survived by several siblings and the late Mr Hawkins Funeral 130 Tuesday at Sherman s Funeral Home with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery Birmingham Iowa in charge of Dr F W Eastwood
While loading hay Ray Jensen was thrown under a wagon as it was swept by flames from burning weeds. The wagon and hay were destroyed and Jensen received severe bruising.
