University of Iowa research in the speech clinic finds nearly one fifth of State University students reach only eighth grade reading level. The study highlights widespread literacy gaps affecting campus life and coursework.
Mrs Leo P Swift aged 40 of Des Moines was seriously hurt when an icicle fell from the north cornice of the 18 story Equitable building. The incident occurred in Des Moines as the woman was struck and injured by the falling ice piece.
In Clinton, robbers with a pistol forced entry at the A. L. Judge confectionery store and escaped with $50. The owner, living upstairs, heard the disturbance but did not investigate the crime.
Mrs. Virginia Bedell of Spirit Lake Dickinson county attorney succeeded Joe Lowe of Algona as president of the fourteenth judicial district bar association after the annual meeting in Emmetsburg. Milton Morling of Emmetsburg was named vice president and K B Welty of Spirit Lake secretary.

Waterloo police rescued Mr and Mrs Frank Goodale and their two children from a box car freezing and nearly starved after Goodale said he lost his carnival job in Texarkana Texas and was trying to reach Plainfield Wisconsin with his family.

In 1888 Indians in the area bought umbrellas at a high price. The Thomas Hedge store carried umbrellas and once held 20,000 in notes from Indians unable to pay cash for this form of protection.
County Home steward Rk D Van Doran and Mrs Van Doran announce a Christmas observance on Thursday December 23 at 730 PM. A tree with presents will be unburdened and gifts distributed. A minister will speak and local school children will provide music and entertainment. Contributions of gifts candy and fruit are welcomed and may be left at George L McDaniel drug store for pickup.
