Elementary students from Stewart School Washington will perform their annual Christmas program at the junior high building Thursday at 7 30 p m directed by Mike Jewell elementary music teacher. Classes from kindergarten through sixth grade will sing solos and group numbers The public is invited.
The Richland and Ollie community chorus directed by Brad Kiesey will perform a sacred Christmas cantata on Wednesday December 14 at 7 30 p m at Richland United Methodist Church. The public is invited and coffee and cookies will be served after.
Southeast Iowa Blood Bank will visit Richland on Thursday December 15 from 3 p.m. to 7 30 p.m. and December 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mother Cabrini Parish Center. Co ordinator Mary Jo Harras hopes about 50 donors. donors with cards urged to attend. Churches assist in collecting names. sign up by calling Mary J Harras Pam Ryan or Marvelene Hendrickson.
Mount Pleasant attorney Donald E. Gartin files a $6.2 million damage suit in Henry County District Court accusing Dan E. McAllister, president of Mount Pleasant Bank and Trust Co., of making harassing threatening phone calls from December 1975 through August 1977.
In Olin Iowa two men were found fatally shot at a residence in a case authorities call murder death by own action. Victims identified as Steven L. Haas 23 and Marion K. Sweet 41. One died at the scene and the other died en route to Mercy Hospital Cedar Rapids. Autopsy pending.
A tornado formed from a winter thunderstorm tore through northeast of downtown Houston harming dozens and damaging hundreds of buildings. Police and fire officials reported one confirmed fatality and many injuries with hundreds of structures damaged and several people treated on site or at hospitals. The five mile path was 300 to 500 feet wide as residents watched the quick, violent swirl from porches and through woodlands and small businesses.
Merle Dean Mast a 25 year old Kalona man died after losing control of a double deck semi loaded with 168 hogs on highway 77 near the Richland Creek bridge. The rig struck the bridge and plunged into the creek. Firefighters worked over an hour to free him. Fifty one hogs were killed or destroyed. Mast was employed by Slabach Trucking of Kalona and died en route to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Funeral services and burial are announced with visitation at Peterseim Chapel Kalona. He was born September 22 1952 and is survived by his parents two sisters and a brother.
In Dakota City Nebraska UPI reports several striking meat cutters were arrested outside the Iowa Beef Processing plant before non-union employees arrived for a second day of work. Police would not disclose arrest numbers or charges. Over 300 Local 222 AMCBW picketed without violence.
Vice President Mondale announced a near agreement to separate Social Security funding from college education tax credits, paving the way for passage of the payroll tax bill. Sen Roth's tax-credit plan remains a sticking point, delaying action on Social Security.

Walt Disney would have loved this one as Irish setter Jesse vanished after an auto crash on I 80 six months ago and wandered 650 miles back to South Elgin Illinois. Owner Jack Millikan refused to give up saying Jesse would return. The dog had no tag and had never been near Nebraska before. Millikan believes she followed a scent home. Jesse arrived pale thin and dirty but now wagging her tail at home last week.
The Iowa Department of Transportation outlines a 1979 to 1983 plan totaling 590 million in highway rail airport and river projects with most funding focused on the northeast third of the state. Major items include 571.5 million for highways including I 380 and Freeway 520 and warnings of fuel tax revenue declines.
