The Evening Journal reports a doll auction with handmade outfits by volunteers raised at least 2400 dollars for the Washington schools band uniform fund. About 21 dolls remained unsold and will be offered later. Bidders paid as high as 80 dollars. the average fell between 15 and 20 dollars. Dolls were donated by the National Bank of Washington and the sale took place in the basement room of the new building.

Kalona Man Fined in DWI Case in Washington County
Harold Claude Miller of Kalona was fined 500 and had his license revoked indefinitely after pleading guilty to a second offense drunken driving in Washington County District Court. Judge Ira F. Morrison ordered Miller to enroll in Kirkwood Community College’s driving while intoxicated program. Sentencing for two co-defendants, Richard A. Soukup of rural Ainsworth and Charles R. Smith of Washington, is set for December 30.

Trucker dies as semi crashes off overpass in Utah
Iowa trucker Jimmy LeRoy Stewart, 36, from Colfax, was killed when the semi struck a guardrail and abutment, flipped over, fell from an overpass and burned on the pavement below. Te d Edward Wogan, 22, of South Newton, was thrown from the truck and remains hospitalized in fair condition.

Fires in Iowa claim life and church blaze
In icy weekend conditions a 74 year old Independence resident, Zazelle Cameron, died from asphyxiation when her two story home burned Saturday. In Des Moines, three people were injured when a rectory fire at St Josephs Catholic Church gutted the building early Sunday. Ruth Bacon, 76, was treated for smoke inhalation and burns. her son and the parish priest Rev Patrick Bacon faced frostbite and smoke inhalation. The Rev David Polich was treated for facial and hand lacerations. The church was destroyed. investigators have not yet determined causes for either blaze. Earlier, two major apartment fires left 40 homeless, including a workman using a propane torch to thaw pipes at a three story building and the Downtowner Apartment Building fire downtown.
