Charles Reed poured crankcase oil into a furnace at Reed's garage and was badly burned when the oil backfired reaching his chest and face. The incident left Reed with significant burns requiring medical attention.
Sidney defeated the ten thousand dollar water bond issue by a two to one margin. A five thousand dollar bond approved earlier was canceled after it was found insufficient to fund the planned repairs.
Roy Houser Jr. 18, a Centerville high school graduate and bassoonist scholarship recipient, fell at school in Rochester New York breaking his left arm on a slant and needing a second setting. He was hospitalized at Stony Memorial in Rochester for treatment after the accident. He had won a scholarship for high achievement at the National Music Contest held in Columbus Ohio. He left Centerville for Rochester in September to begin his college duties.
Polk county purchased the Salisbury House estate in a tax sale for 21,190.23 dollars covering delinquent taxes and fees for 1934 1935 and 1936. The Tudor mansion with 24 rooms on 10 acres and valued art and stone works is described as worth over a million dollars.
The Iowa State aid of Education will re advertise for bids on 45000 tons of coal for the University of Iowa. Secretary Merrill Pierson said bids were rejected earlier due to state coal preference law and Illinois origin of low bids. The board approved a leave of absence for Prof. C M Updegraff until Sept 1 and accepted the resignations of Dr. R H Fitzgerald and Prof. J H Buchanan from Iowa State College chemistry.
Des Moines cafe operator Jack Wood twenty two discovers he has a sister Ruby of Chicago and three Straits siblings including brothers Otis fifty two and Wilson twenty four after learning he was adopted by Mr and Mrs Otto Wood. He plans to visit Chicago for Christmas to meet his other relatives.

Rook was played after pot luck. Next meeting at Orie OConnor house with Mrs OConnor Mrs Campbell and Mrs Duane Hazen. Mrs Robert Geni keiger attended the funeral of her aunt Mrs Sadie McCarty in Washington.
Mary Jane Gingery ten years old died at county hospital after a long illness beginning last June from a heart ailment linked to rheumatism. Funeral services set for Monday at 2 PM at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev L Fredmund. Burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survived by mother Elizabeth Squire Gingery and brother Vonald. father Dr Howard Gingery preceded in death. Family home at South Third Avenue.
Cyrus chapter Royal Arch Masons elected Ray Cox high priest Wise Long King Andrew Kelso scube A W Yard secretary and Roger Sherman treasurer in annual elections. Installation planned for the second Friday in January. Nominations for Temple building committee included Will Carson H T Carris and Wise Long with one to be chosen later.
Police killed two bandits during an early morning casino robbery in Kansas City. A customer, Edward Crocker aged 40, also died in the gun battle. a third bandit escaped. One slain bandit was identified as Henry Floyd Shoe maker. The other has no identification.
The Shorter chapel A. M. E. church reported seventy five dollars raised from an old Virginia game dinner served yesterday at the Y M C A. Proceeds after expenses benefit the church and support its second annual dinner supervised by the stewardesses.
Des Moines reports that warmer weather is forecast for Iowa today as a low pressure from Canada approaches. Forecasters predict temperatures reaching into the twenties tonight across the state.
Creston high school presented the operetta Open House under the direction of Margaret Gault, daughter of Mrs. A. E. Gault of Crawfordsville. The production, praised as one of the finest school entertainments, featured cast photos and a portrait of Miss Gault. Her work was lauded for training the singers and shaping the program to near perfection.
Glendale Dec 10 Members of the N S A club drove to the LaVerne Anderson home for their monthly meeting Friday evening. Nine women attended the all day Glendale and Spread Eagle Home-makers gathering at the Lloyd Hopping home Tuesday with a landscaping lesson and pot luck lunch.
Heights PTA elects S. W. Easter as temporary chairman to work with the school board on a new building project. The committee named includes Easter, Everett Burham, and T. A. Michels, with A. E. Atchison and Glenn Mace participating. The board discussed site plans, inspections, and a chart of the district needs, with Prof. Lambert scheduled to recheck the building over holidays.
