A Iowa state board report shows venereal disease cases rose 14 percent in the first 11 months of the year vs 1941. For ages 15 to 19 cases fell slightly, gonorrhea up 14 percent, syphilis down 26 percent. Health officials cite increased reporting rather than new infections.
War bulletin from Washington dispatches reports four major developments today: transport of troops and supplies through the Pacific, strategic movements by U S forces, and concentrated effort on allied fronts. United press summaries indicate intensified operations and steady supply lines amid ongoing campaigns.
The 21 936 gross ton transport President Coolidge owned by American President Lines and operated for the army by the War Shipping Administration was sunk in the South Pacific with about 22 000 tons loaded with troops and equipment. Skipper Henry Nelson of San Francisco survived. Four men were lost. The sinking is the tenth American transport sunk in this war and follows several recent losses in North Africa and the Solomons. The navy did not specify the exact date or the type of mine involved.
Washington officials report progress in the rubber program but warn the situation remains critical and demand strict conservation. In Des Moines twenty-one Towa motorists faced suspension of their gasoline ration coupons Friday for speeds over 25 miles per hour or tire abuse. The list, part of the first group of excess speed reports from the Iowa state highway patrol, will be sent to state OPA headquarters and then to local ration boards for hearings to determine possible revocation of the offenders’ gasoline rations.
Herbert Wilcox, 22, of Ottumwa, was found dead Friday in the cab of a parked Burlington truck. Coroner R. O. Giles said death was caused by carbon monoxide fumes, with Wilcox believed to have slept in the vehicle since midnight.
Iowa reports final retirement of World War I soldier bonus bonds with 1,100,009 paid plus 49,500 interest. 90,000 remains outstanding though funds may cover the balance. Treasurer Bagley foresees about three million dollars in bonus funds to address the remainder. Some bonds, 33,000, have been due since 1939 with unknown holders.
County rationing officials take a breather after a rush of thousands of gasoline and fuel oil applications. Ration books are mailed to applicants, with 4117 receiving A books and B books to be mailed. Seven staffers remain on duty as students aided during peak periods.
Lieutenant Joseph W. Brookhart, son of a former senator, returns to Washington after nine months of combat duty in the Solomon Islands. He notes the Japs are tough flyers but optimistic about eventual Allied victory, mentioning his 63 missions and multiple enemy aerial engagements with gunnery challenges and restoring morale.
Washington residents urged not to use telephones during the blackout next Monday night from 10 to 10 20. Use emergency calls only for physicians or fires. Keep lines clear for air raid wardens and reports. Stay off streets unless in citizens defense or with auxiliary passes. All lights must be out and cars must stop at the siren with lights off.
Charles Mejlree aged 77, a bachelor living alone in Richmond, died after taking poison. His brother Ed Melllree found him unconscious. a strychnine bottle was nearby. Dr W S Kyle, county coroner, ruled death by own action with no inquest. Mejlree had worried over health and potential helplessness.
Eugene Salisbury, 43, a farm worker from Illinois, died Friday from a fractured skull after falling from a horse hit by an automobile last Sunday near the town. He had been employed on a local farm since October.
The Angel Choir presents a medieval pageant in three acts set in Thirteenth Century France with roles for Prophet Isaiah peasant children and women, a cathedral scene, merchants, and gift bearers. Cast includes Lee Goodlander Charles Fish Jim Mohr Margot Virginia Walker Cecile Nancy Barden and Teddy West among many others.
The night brought one degree below zero at the official observer’s thermometer and the cold lingered around zero today as the month’s cold spell continues.

Mell G Boileau 40 died at 1030 last night at University Hospital Iowa City after an operation on Thursday He was a painter by trade He married Alta Moberly on August 8 1925 Survived by his wife four children his parents a sister and a brother all of Washington Funeral services Sunday at Sherman’s funeral home in Washington led by Rev Ivan Riess of the Church of Christ.
