Des Moines based column notes U S District Judge Charles A Dewey ruled Iowa City need not repay 28140 dollars in public works administration funds advanced for a municipal light and power plant planned but never built.
Glen Wilson of Oskaloosa received a life sentence from Judge Frank Beehly at Fort Madison penitentiary after being convicted by a jury of killing Harry Bolden last June during a fight. Witnesses said Wilson beat Bolden to death with a club while brothers Al and Dick Wilson restrained the victim. The other Wilsons face trial at the next term.
Gilbert L Godbergsen 21 a stone cutter in a monument works was bound over on 2500 bond to appear in federal court for violating the selective service act. He was brought before Commissioner Hubbard and refused counsel choosing to defend himself.
Des Moines City Solicitor Fred T. Van Liew ruled the northwest corner property deeded to Grinnell College should not be exempt from taxation. The exemption request was filed Aug. 1 by J. F. Rosenfield for Town college trustees, with Younker family deeds including J. C. Fenney Co. and F end W Grand store buildings. The Younkers held a 60 year lease on part of the site while most of the property was transferred to the college.
Mrs. Fred B Wolf of Primghar Iowa was killed instantly when her automobile was struck by a southbound M. and St. L. passenger train at a crossing on Highway 10 west of here in Pocahontas county. Sheriff Hubert Kapseh and Coroner F. E. Heathman identified her from papers in her handbag showing she worked for the state department of social welfare.
A legislative committee report for the 1943 session details overcrowding and under staffing in Iowa state mental hospitals, criticizing antiquated methods. It urges a health department study, higher pay for lower tier state employees, a fire property fund, expanded vocational education, purchase of the St Marks building, and sanitary district sewer consolidation with funding by beneficiaries.
Alfred Wessler 50 of North Marion avenue died at 3 30 yesterday at county hospital from pneumonia followed by heart failure. He was a partner in Wessler Brothers, born in Austria November 28 1892, and moved with his family from Canada to North Dakota before settling in Keota. The service at Trinity Lutheran church Sunday at 2 30 will be led by Rev. E L Stuempfig with Rev. T C Meibohm assisting. He will be interred at the family residence preceding the funeral.
Commander Ivan Norton warns residents about the midwest blackout from 10:00 to 10:20 PM. No motion or lights except fully blacked rooms, blue discs on flashlights, red discs for auxiliary police, and armband identifiers. Theatergoers remain inside. air raid sirens sound at 10 and towns issue warnings. Everyone urged to stay home and safeguard property.
Dr. Arthur Steindler of the State University of Iowa and staff conducted a full day clinic on crippled children at the Washington health unit. The team included Dr. T J Greteman Dr. Robert L Jackson and others with nurse Clara Anderson and social worker Elizabeth Rhpert. A cardiac clinic follows with Dr. Jackson overseeing about 20 children. The event marks Washington as the tenth city to host regular state clinics and plans for permanent arrangement and a similar session in six months.
Washington announces 165 Red Cross chapters will set up recruitment stations to meet the 1943 goal of 30,000 army nurses. Miss Mary Geard says the Red Cross will review all applications, freeing corps officers for assignments. The War Department allows married nurses and certain unmarried women with dependents to serve.
In 1922 the Wessler brothers arrived in Wash ington and opened a combined blacksmithing and wood-working business which they have operated for decades. The elder partner lived with Rudolph, his brother and business partner, for 81 years and served as an elder at Trinity Lutheran church. He had two additional brothers, Adolph of Bowesmont, North Dakota, and August.
Three Washington youths completed enlistment in the Marine Corps at Des Moines. Willis D. Booth Jr Stanley T Richards and Milo W Steele Jr are listed. Navy recruit Bernard Nicholas Redlinger from Wellman and Army Air Corps man Willard D. Patterson of Wellman also enlisted.
In Nashua, Montana, two brothers are reported deceased in a local incident. Authorities have not released further details pending investigation.
Washington reports new wartime meat price ceilings effective immediately for sales to war procurement agencies. Kansas City remains the base point with $21 per 100 pounds for Grade A, $19 for Grade B, and $17 for Grade C, and a maximum $22 for AA grade. Other zones including zone 5 in eastern Iowa show $21.50 for A, $19.50 for B, and $17.50 for C.

Britsh Eighth Army may strike El Agheila as German forces mutiny worries rise in Norway and Finland. On the Russian front Soviet planes hit supply columns aiding Germans before Stalingrad while fighting persists near Veliki-Luki and Rzhev. In the Pacific MacArthur’s forces repel counterattacks between Buna and Buna Mission and move closer to the surrounded Japanese.
Richard W. Bordwell of Washington was the first to register in the sixth military service registration at the county selective service office. Paul W. Shettler, Kalona, based but living in Johnson county, registered earlier today. The registration period runs weekdays 9 to 5 through December 1942 with specific dates for those born between July 1 and December 1, 1924.
Des Moines reports show 50 communities totaling $33,445.19 for 12 days, up 18 percent from 1941. Jefferson leads with 190 percent gain, Clinton, Cedar Rapids, and Council Bluffs also post strong increases. Davenport reintroduces mail sale with solid results as statewide drive funds tuberculosis fight.
The United States Navy announced the loss of the 6,198 ton cargo ship Alchiba in the Solomons with three crewmen still missing. In the same communiqué, an Army Flying Fortress on a reconnaissance over New Georgia was attacked by 15 Japanese Zeros but returned to base after shooting down five attackers.
Iowa wartime agencies will test training Monday night during a statewide blackout. Civil Air Patrol pilots will observe and report on effectiveness while State Guard members patrol areas and guard bridges and utilities. State Highway Patrol will assist civilians along highways with authority to arrest violators.
Originally six were notified for December induction but the list was revised after it was found Harlan H. J. Anduser of Washington is not 38 years old. He was ordered to appear with the others named in the December call.
Cedar Rapids reports three of seven prospective selectees treated for food poisoning after returning to the city. The incident involved seven individuals awaiting processing, with medical staff assessing additional cases.
Twelve tank cars loaded with oil derailed on the Santa Fe main line near New Boston early Thursday, causing a seven hour traffic interruption. Officials say a broken axle on one car caused the wreck. Rapids from Camp Dodge, Iowa, remained in St Luke's hospital Thursday. four had been released.
