The Washington County Cattlemen's Association fixed February 24 for its annual banquet at Jack Hamilton's Club. Tickets go on sale after January 1 with details to follow. Directors assist with weigh-in of 4-H and FFA beeves this Saturday.
The Washington Post Office will open all day Saturday December 14 and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the postal window. On Saturday December 21 the window will run 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Large collection boxes will be placed in the lobby for local and out of town mail deposits. Stamp collecting kits for sale are offered as gifts for new collectors.
A semi truck and a Burlington Northern train collided near the intersection of East Washington Street and the Burlington tracks at noon. The front of the truck was damaged but no injuries were reported. In Packwood, Iowa, Richard Adam’s farm home suffered a heavy fire two weeks after a previous blaze. Firefighters from Packwood, Hedrick, and Batavia fought the fire, with officials noting a possible gas ignition in the earlier garage fire.
A UPI report says a U.S. District Court jury in Des Moines found two police officers, William Hanson and William Trimble, not liable in a civil rights suit filed by Jerry Jean Finney, sister of 15 year old Clarence Jackson of Atchison, Kan. Jackson was killed when a bullet from Hanson struck him during a pursuit of juveniles in a stolen car.
Snowmobile owners must renew for 1975 by December 31 1974. Renewals available at Maxine Smith county recorder's office in the courthouse. Turn in old registration and pay a 6.50 renewal fee for the coming year.
A burned body discovered in a charred car east of Alpha Iowa was tentatively identified as David Ray Armstrong 28 of Rockton Illinois. Armstrong had recently been injured in a motorcycle crash and a pin in the victim’s leg matched his medical records. Authorities said the car was found on an abandoned farm by a local farmer.
The Iowa Highway Commission unveiled a $338.8 million five year primary road plan noting inflation and reduced fuel tax receipts cut project completion to about 50 percent. Officials warn that statewide cutbacks in 1976 to 1980 could raise unemployment and slow the interstate system, with funds possibly needing $50 million more from state and federal sources. Washington County projects include freeway 518 work and right of way purchases, plus repairs on highway 92 west of West Chester and multiple bridge efforts.
Washington and Louisa County authorities hold two suspects in their jails Tuesday in the Dec 1 killing of 81 year old Mrs Sean B Cukerbaum near Brighton Missouri. A third man remains at large as investigators press a two state search.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met with Turkish and Greek Foreign Ministers in Brussels and pledged U.S. efforts for an early Cyprus settlement based on conciliation. He spoke after separate talks with Milev Esenbel and Dimitrios Bitsios and planned further sessions to narrow their positions.
President Ford met with congressional leaders and top advisers to review pending legislation and outline a potential new package to curb inflation and recession. He planned an evening address before the Business Council as talks focused on final action on measures such as the trade reform bill ahead of adjournment.
The Senate confirmed Nelson Rockefeller as vice president by a 90 to 7 vote. A House action looms after Judiciary Committee reports, with concerns about wealth and gifts raised by critics. Republicans and Democrats noted his public service, while some voiced reservations over gifts and past actions.
Police in Little Rock seek psychiatric care for Hunter Bailey Shirley after a sniping incident over the Arkansas River. Shirley, 25, who fired on officers from a railroad bridge tower, is alert at the University of Arkansas Medical Center after surgery to remove a bullet, with no current charges filed but possible future action. Policemen report prior treatment for low mood.
County Attorney Tracy Anderson and County Attorney-elect Richard Bordwell note a 62 percent rise in 1974 criminal workload, with 177 new cases vs 110 in 1973. Social services cases reached 74 through June 1974, up from 19 in all of 1973, with ongoing cases 66 of the 177.
