Thick corn yields depend on soil quality says Dungan
G H Dungan of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture notes that rich soil should support 16 000 plants per acre or four per hill on 40 inch rows to reach 100 bushels per acre. He warns that in poorer soils four kernels per hill wastes seed and lowers yield due to over planting.
