A Creston column reports new locks installed on all cells in the Union County jail. County authorities express relief after revealing they knew for weeks that the old locks could be opened with a spoon, knife blade, or other flat key like tools.
Des Moines reports county farm bureaus across the state are debating a plan to raise annual dues to ten dollars in 1937. Membership in many counties is voting at their annual meetings as the proposal is referred downward for decision.
Ottumwa boards announce restoration of the last half of 1933 salary cuts for public school teachers and custodians effective January 1. The action completes the phased reversal of a prior reduction.
Katharine Cornell staged Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in Des Moines drawing a crowd of about 4,000 with an audience eager to applaud her every gesture. The Shrine Auditorium will host Tobacco Road on December 20 and 21 as the next attraction.
The Mooney Larrabee Brown Swiss herd sold at Fort Dodge brought $14 000 from 60 head. Top price $509 for Mexico, with Pride Marie Granger at $435 and a seven month old bull calf at $400. Over 900 people attended. buyers came from eight states. the herd was founded over 50 years ago by the late Gov. William Larrabee.
Des Moines reports from George Olmsted, chairman, say the Young Republican National Federation is virtually broke and must close headquarters unless more funds arrive. He cites monthly costs of salaries overhead and travel totaling about 1000 dollars with only a fraction of expected income in hand.
Iowa City announces Professor George D. Stoddard head of the child welfare research station is named dean of the University of Iowa Graduate College by President Eugene E. Gilmore. He succeeds Dr. Carl E. Seashore who has served since 1908 and will remain head of the psychology department.
W. Cornish Beck, a recent witness in the Edward L. O Conn or conspiracy trial, is sued by Dr. W. J. Cremin for 529 dollars for medical services from October 16 to December 31, 1934. Beck, then manager of the state liquor store in Sioux City, later moved to Omaha, Nebraska after his illness.
Premier Laval sent the revised proposal to Italy Ethiopia and the league for negotiation. Mussolini was expected to accept as a basis for discussion with changes reducing Ethiopian lands and expanding Haile Selassie’s control. Ethiopia pledged to resist any plan omitting territorial integrity and independence. Small nations denounced the plan as a betrayal and warned it ends prospects of an oil embargo.
A delegation led by Richmond pastors and Kalona business leaders urged the county board of supervisors to surface roads to two churches and two cemeteries in English River township. The board will consider the request next year with a possible project in 1936.
Five boys of various ages presented the Y's Men's club program last evening led by Lee Holland. Skippy Spencer Harold Davis Art Donovan Sunshine Smith and Whirlwind Stoops were guests. They discussed the Y M C A and reasons for nonmembers among their gang and the need for more sponsorship. The committee plans to help with grade school boys groups and a Christmas party for children at next week's meeting.
John Wilbert Campbell 76 died suddenly at his home a mile north of town after driving to town and working on the farm. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 PM at L A Jones Funeral Home, with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born Sept 23 1859 in Mercer County PA and lived in Iowa most of his life. He married Etta Carson in 1882 and is survived by three children Harry H Campbell Mae Campbell and Mrs Harry Maxwell, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Brother and sisters Frank Fowler Callf Rhue Jay are listed as surviving siblings.
The resolutions committee of the American Farm Bureau federation issued a blanket endorsement of the administrations farm program. They pledged faith in the processing tax and federal soil erosion projects and advocated continued support for President Roosevelt and his farm organization. Charles E. Hearst of Iowa chaired the committee and the resolutions were to be acted on later today.
The widow of Walter Liggett, militant editor, identified Isadore Blumenfeld as her husband’s assassin. A county grand jury began a broad probe into vice conditions in Minneapolis as part of the same report.
Stanley Reed, solicitor general, abandoned his argument in the farm projects case before the Supreme Court as the defense faced a temporary setback. He collapsed yesterday under intense questioning from justices, prompting a brief pause in proceedings.
In Wayland on December 11 the Commercial club re organized electing Sam Bergh C W Schlatter Dr BE Ritter Frank Magdefrau and Jess Roth as directors. Kermit Klopfenstein is named the new secretary.
Washington Townsend club announces a meeting at the court house Thursday evening December 12 at 7 30. President William James and Secretary Lennie Sutton invite all who want to hear about the plan to attend. Walter Holsteen of Burlington will explain as district manager. Everyone is invited.
Mrs Roy Hildebrand and Mrs Bert Garrett of Letts shopped downtown yesterday. Mark and Mrs Will McCreedy of the Ainsworth community were also mentioned. One sister, Mrs Al Cocklin, is deceased.
Frank Eicher of Wayland was found dead from heart trouble this morning after his sisters called him to breakfast. He was 72, lived with sisters Mary and Katie, and leaves brothers Jacob John and Peter, with Martin deceased five years ago. A lifelong Mennonite, he moved to town eight years ago and attended a Commercial club meeting last night. Funeral arrangements are not yet announced.
Cleo Yoder, a Johnson county 4 H youth who exhibited Pat's Blue Ribbon steer for grand championship at Chicago's International Livestock Exposition, will be honored by Wellman and Iowa City groups. A 7 p.m. banquet at Gobble Inn will feature W J Roudabush and include family, Donahue of Holbrook, and local farmers.
The veterans bonus appears headed for cash payment in the new year after a United Press poll found overwhelming congressional sentiment in favor. The issue will be revived after the January 3 return, as two veteran groups seek a compromise to unite factions and override a potential presidential veto. Roosevelt’s stance remains uncertain.
Sioux City reports that Judge Earl Peters overruled the motion for a directed verdict of acquittal for Attorney General Ed L. O Connor. The ruling came as court reconvened, with defense ready to present their case. Arguments centered on impeachment versus indictment and venue in Woodbury and Polk counties.
Word from E. B. Hammer and the City hospital reports he is progressing well. Hospital officials hope to see him back at his usual haunts soon.
Miss Inez Holden died at the home of Mr and Mrs Clarence Bat in Chicago after an illness of year and a half. She was born May 28 1875 in Washington D C and was the daughter of John Harvey Holden and Mary Jane Marsden Holden. Interment will be in Chicago.
W. B. Mike Edwards is a leading trap shooter in the state. Known around Washington, he is often barred from meets. Last Sunday at Fairfield he shot twice and won two blankets. He hoped to enter the national trap shoot next year but would face a sizeable handicap. He won’t admit it, but the penalty for being good is clear.
