Grace Boston, a Cedar Rapids native, becomes official greeter in the city through a cooperative effort of local businesses. Her duties include meeting celebrities and interviewing new families and residents. She has toured Europe and led tours during the Century of Progress in Chicago.
After 95 years of combined service the Chicago and North Western Railway machinists Mark and Charlies Anderson retire on pension. The twins, both 70, served in the Iowa division and worked as machinists for decades.
Two Iowan education leaders received national recognition. M C Moberly of the Sioux City board of education was elected to the National Association of Public School Business Officials executive committee. Julius Black of Iowa Future Farmers of America was chosen secretary of the national organization.
Cedar Rapids businessman Harold Skinner keeps over 250 pheasants of five breeds in his care. He states pheasants remain wild at heart even when reared in captivity.
District Judge Carl B. Stiger dismissed Ray P. Scott’s suit against the state board of assessment and review and dissolved a temporary injunction. The ruling upholds the three point tax law as constitutional, a backbone of the Democratic administration’s taxation program.
Shenandoah Page county officials report William Kramer of Shambaugh as the state’s oldest man at 112, long active before recent illness. In nearby Fremont county, Mrs. Nancy Hurst of Tabor is likely the oldest woman, celebrating her 104th birthday last June.
Mrs. Alice A. Granger's will filed for probate leaves 10000 for Webster county public high school graduates to attend the University of Iowa. An additional 10000 will be added to the fund after other bequests are paid, totaling nearly 50000.
Supt E A Ralston spoke to the Rotary Club at their noon meeting about public schools. He highlighted two key challenges: Equality of Opportunity and Adequacy of Finance, and discussed the problems education faces today.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace urged American farmers to view the Canadian reciprocity agreement with a long-term perspective at the American Farm Bureau convention in Chicago. He calls the treaty a clear aid to agriculture and warns against opponents funded by interests opposing fair play for farmers. He notes no concessions on world market commodities and that other concessions do not harm major American farming groups.

Ross Van Nostrand was re elected teacher of the United Presbyterian Men's Bible class at the annual dinner. Officers named include President Hugh Mccleery and Vice President Dave McLaughlin. The event featured Fort Sherman as singing director, Dr C A Boice speaking on The Lost Ten Tribes, and a business meeting conducted by Hugh Mccleery.
The December meeting of the Men's club of the Methodist church will be held Thursday evening at 6 30. Harrison Dodder leads a special committee to prepare and serve dinner with no charge to members and guests. A good crowd is anticipated and plans for the coming year will be discussed.
The DeMolays elected John Applegate as mayor and named Donald I. Davis and Paul Kyle to the council at the Masonic Temple. Officials appointed include Marshalls Daryl Dodder George Means Walter Jungbluth Arden Hughes City Clerk Hayden Hughes City Solicitor Gifford Morrison and others. A future council meeting will pass new ordinances and a Mayor's Ball with a top orchestra is planned.

The Kalona school gymnasium auditorium addition bids were awarded with the Robert Scote Construction Co of Albert Lea securing the general contract. Plumbing and heating went to Milo Simanek of Cedar Rapids and electrical to W. J. L. Fowler of Cedar Rapids. Total bid around $40,000, pending WPA approval.
At city hall the council held a hearing on final assessments for Washington street surfacing. One adjustment was granted. The resolution levies the special tax on benefited parcels, with due dates and installments. City Clerk Howard Fulton reported $766 paid, about ten percent of the total $8291 levy. remaining work carries over to next year.
Rural postal authorities urged patrons to secure stamps from the carrier and have letters stamped in boxes due to hardship from penny left in rural boxes. Postmaster M C DeLong said carriers are not obliged to stamp mail and benefits are favors. Cold weather and bad roads add to delivery burdens.
John Greenup aged 32 died and Lester Peterson was critically injured when a Burlington passenger train struck the car they rode in near Mt. Pleasant this morning. Car driver John Kreiss sustained injuries.
Peace in Europe hung in the balance as Paris and Rome favored the French British settlement proposals for the Ethiopian war but others remained uncertain. London indicated a hitch in negotiations and Addis Ababa showed little sign Emperor Haile Selassie would consent to Italy taking half of Ethiopia.
Townsend Session President William James and Secretary Lennie Sutton announce a club meeting at the court house Tuesday evening Dec. 12 at 7 30. Walter Holeteen of Burlington district manager will explain the plan. All who want to hear about the plan are welcome.
State motor vehicle department representatives will visit Washington County on Wednesday forenoon to examine applicants for chauffeurs licenses for next year. About 400 chauffeurs are expected to be licensed. existing licenses expire soon. A sample question list includes age limits, rest periods, unlicensed drivers, badge display, operator licenses, signatures, and license expiration dates.
Des Moines December 10 an emergency meeting of the Republican state central committee was called to address the resignation of Chairman Pressey Frank of Waterloo. Frank cited poor health and a wish to focus on his law practice as the reasons for stepping down after weeks of consideration.
Washington D C December 10 The civil service commission announced that all candidates for the Brighton postmaster position must file their applications by midnight January 38 with a Brighton postmark accepted until the final date. The notice outlines the exam process and requirements for applicants.
Farm Bureau members from the county will gather Saturday at the Methodist church for the annual meeting. The program includes morning business sessions at eleven, a noon dinner organized by Mrs Homer Birney, and an address on the new state organization setup for next year. The county Farm Bureau chorus will perform under director Mrs Dunham Morrison after several rehearsals.
Judge Patterson announced court will be held Friday Dec 13. The Brighton post office clerk position offers 1700 dollars yearly. The appointment is not under civil service but under a July 12 1923 presidential order favoring reputation experience and education.

Pat Horak grand knight presided at the Knights of Columbus regu lar meeting for the first time since his accident. A large attendance attended the session and dinner followed the gathering.
Combined talent from several colleges will present Handel's The Messiah at the Methodist church on the Sunday before Christmas. Soloists announced include contralto Mrs Ruth Ebling Massey Cedar Rapids tenor Harold Reeves Cedar Rapids and bass Carl G Meander Parsons College with piano solos by Mrs E D Morrison Jr and Miss Margaret Corbin.
John Block, manager of the basement of the Montgomery Ward store, was placed at guard on the second all state basketball team when he played with Brooklyn high school. The Glenn Bar clay family also lived in Brooklyn until 1921.
