Ed Philpott Grove township school board president was found guilty by a district court jury of stealing coal from the school. He also faces an indictment accusing him of stealing 16 gallons of school paint, with a hearing on that charge pending.
Paul Weisbrod, 17, started a fire in Emmetsburg's business district causing 100000 dollars in damage. A sanity board found him mentally incompetent and recommended treatment at University Hospital Iowa City. Sheriff Montgomery questioned him after prior burglary and oil station robberies. He confessed after four hours.
Hundreds of toys from the Boy Scout Varsity theater matinee are being repaired and redecorated in the manual arts department of Iowa City junior high. The Social Service League and church and lodge groups will oversee the distribution.
Thirty four civic governmental and business organizations met at the Hotel Fort Des Moines to form the Iowa State Safety council with W Earl Hall as president. The group aims to coordinate safety efforts across highways homes and industry through educational work to stress simple safety rules.
Exira Justice of the Peace A M Laurscen fined Clarence Day $4 and costs on a charge of passing a vehicle without warning. The case was filed by Fred Clemensen, Audubon County sheriff, who previously arrested Clemmensen for passing a stop sign and the sheriff was fined $5.

Funeral services for Henry Durian 67 will be held at 1 30 P M Tuesday from his home southeast of Wellman with Rev Thomas Osborne of Welman Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Pilotburg cemetery. He died at his home after heart trouble. He was born February 23 1868. He lived on the family farm near Richmond and then the Wellman farm where he died. He is survived by a sister Anna Durian and a brother Charles Jr both of Wellman and by brothers Fred and William deceased. He was a longtime member of the Methodist church.
A large chorus from several churches will perform Handel's Messiah at the Methodist church on December 22 under the direction of Miss Carolyn Hamilton. The Christmas favorite, long associated with the season, promises to grow more thrilling with each listening as rehearsals continue.
Three Keota residents were treated at Washington county hospital after a car accident two miles west of West Chester. Betty Helscher and Bernice Flander were discharged this morning, while Bettys cousin Gerald Helscher was to leave later. The Flander car rolled over, disabling the vehicle and ejecting the occupants at about 9 30 p m.
Hugh Morris of Ainsworth sent a load of sixty Hereford calves to the Chicago International Livestock Show. The cattle weighed about 320 pounds each at purchase from Turkington Bros in Washington on March 15. Despite minimal feed they ranked among 81 of 186 loads passing the sitting committee and earned modest returns.
William W. Wilson 77 dies at Washington County Hospital after admission for treatment. Heart attack listed as cause. Survived by son Charles R. Wilson and daughter Mrs. Louis Beard with twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral Tuesday at 2 PM from his son’s home. burial Elm Grove. Ralph Wittich to arrange. Dr. B F Schwartz to officiate. He was a longtime resident, Methodist, and landowner with ties to Col C J Wilson and Mrs H M Shaver.
Fairfield students presented a petition for laxer chapel rules to Dean Fred J. Hinkhouse and await his decision before choosing to strike or attend chapel as faculty hold a meeting on the issue.
Des Moines report shows Miss Agnes Samuelson proposing a year long recognition plan for school bus drivers with no accidents. Schools would monitor drivers and report to the state board of health to award the safest operator.
Des Moines reports organized labor warned Iowa WPA officials that a statewide strike will occur if prevailing wage payments are not met by December 15. The warning came today as WPA workers protested for pay.
Bible Day was held at the United Presbyterian church yesterday with Rev. D. C. Fulton preaching on Seven Wonders of the Bible and reading an evening episode. The service reflected a joyous scene from a 400 year old English home when the first Bible in the language was first handed to the people. Morning responsive reading used a pamphlet from the American Bible Society. An exhibit of Bibles is on display at the public library to mark the anniversary.
Wayne Rash a 42 year old carpenter of Keota died yesterday morning after long illness of heart trouble and paralysis. Funeral at 2:30 Tuesday at the Christian church with burial in Keota cemetery. Survived by widow Amelia Trier Rash, mother Mrs. Jones of Richland, brother Dell Rash of Des Moines, a sister Mrs. Art Saunders of Washington. Byron, their son, died in 1925. Born May 1 1893 in Richland.
Mr and Mrs Prank P Gardner visited friends this morning en route from Wellman to Des Moines. They called on his brother C C Gardner in Wellman before continuing home.
Thirty five junior department children formed the choir for last night's Methodist service the first of a series emphasizing the new hymnal. An older Youth Choir will sing next Sunday with teen written hymns. Dr B F Schwartz led antiphone singing and Teddy Schwartz played violin obligato for the Christmas time hymns. The sermon was A Man Up a Tree and Wendel Creath gave the prayer. In Des Moines today Dr Rh F Schwartz and O E Schmitt attend a regional evangelism conference with several bishops and educators. A two weeks evangelistic campaign begins January 1 at Washington Methodist church following a 6 36 dinner for the Men’s Club.
The Brighton high school girls trio Ruth Picken Maxine Weidner and Wanda Schafer won the county Legion Auxiliary district contest at the American Legion hall in Iowa City on December 11 receiving top honors over Washington entries Violet and Viola Blick. They were accompanied by pianist Marjorie Petratz and directed by Ruth Michaelson. Judges were Mrs. Lawrence Wilson Miss Isabelle Davis and Miss Mildred Craig. District winners statewide will broadcast on WHO on set dates.
Sunday evening firemen responded to the 300 block of East Third Street to extinguish a blaze in Dr. A. C. Petersons car parked in front of his home. The fire, likely from short circuited wiring, was quickly controlled and repairs were minor, with the car back in use the next day. Fire department rescue aided by prompt telephone office cooperation.
