Mrs. Lester Orr of the Sunshine committee at the Y W C A reports generous support from Washington for the toy and book drive. Contributions may be left in the Y M C A women’s room Tuesday or Friday, or collected by Mrs. Orr if mailed. Local stores including Dodder Paint Shop and J & Lemmon have donated paint for refurbishing old toys. Shops selling toys offer slightly worn items during Christmas season. Girls from the college Y W plan to help remodel and paint. Girl Scouts will assist. Work starts Monday in the women’s room of the Y.

D. D. Sherman presented a fountain pen to Stewart.
West Chester defeated the Brighton Independents 48 to 4 and Ainsworth beat Cotter 18 to 2 in the county independent basketball league first round. Games were played last night at West Chester high school gymnasium with a large crowd.
Washington high school quarterback Dale Kiesey was named to the Des Moines Register second all-state football team. He led Little Six stars on the squad as the league produced no first team selections.
At a Wellman meeting, a resolution was approved to ask the state highway commission to designate the Muscatine to Montezuma road as a state primary road. A five county supervisor committee was named to press the request. the route runs from Muscatine through Nichols Lone Tree River Junction Riverside Kalona Wellman Kinross South English Webster Keswick to Montezuma with potential gravel surfacing in coming years.
Funeral services for Robert F. Riley will be held Thursday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. P. E. Roll officiating. Burial is in Woodlawn cemetery.

Miss Effie Haines former county public health nurse and her mother Mrs Mary Elizabeth Haines died by inhaling gas in their Davenport apartment. Police found the bodies late Monday. Miss Haines aged 22 and her mother 76.
Charles D. Reed reports Iowa crop value fell by 143.79 million dollars from 1929 to 1930 the lowest since 1921 deflation. Corn losses lead declines with 9 million. oats hay and other crops also dropped amid a year of extreme cold heat and drought across the state.
William Kuhn 23, with access to gold coast drawing rooms, faces Judge John H. Lyle on charges of threatening to kidnap and kill his former partner Miss Marion Wright 18. The letters demanded 25000 to be sent to McKay and warned of harm to Wright's family if not delivered. Detectives call the extortion plot serious as wealth families move to winter homes and avoid public appearances at night.
