Ellsworth Richardson of Albia Iowa becomes the first woman to receive the American Farm Bureau Federation distinguished service award at the annual meeting in Boston. Nominated by local and national colleagues she is noted as a pioneer organizer of farm women in Iowa with prior work in Oskaloosa and Washington addresses.
Secretary of War Hurley told the National Rivers and Harbors Congress that a vast system of inland waterways could cut transport costs for the midwest. Three midwest farm workers receive agriculture's distinguished service award at the 12th National convention. Dudley H. Myers of Mendon Illinois, Professor L. H. Haecker of Lincoln Nebraska, and Mrs Ellsworth Richardson of Albia Iowa are honored, with Richardson the first woman recipient.
William N. Doak was sworn in as Secretary of Labor succeeding James J. Davis who recently left the post to become a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania. Doak’s confirmation by the Senate came yesterday.
Washington county residents organize a charity Poultry Day on December 17 to collect and dress farm birds for transport to Chicago. Women and children in Chicago face hunger, and county towns will accept poultry donations until 3 PM, with dressing and transport funded locally.

Robert Freeman Riley died at 9 10 in Washington county hospital from pneumonia after ten days illness. He leaves a wife Gertrude Nolan Riley, his parents Mr and Mrs David Riley, two sisters Mrs Bessie Ibendah and Mrs Charles Fish, and two brothers Fred and Lacey Riley. Funeral planned around 2 PM Thursday at Jones funeral home with Rev P W Roll.
J Patton was jailed in Washington county awaiting district court action on wife desertion. Sheriff George Struble arrested him yesterday at Humboldt, following a grand jury indictment returned at the November term of district court.
Workmen excavating a Niagara Falls sewer unearthed a skeleton believed to be an American soldier from the War of 1812. Three brass buttons of the period were found beside the remains. Locally reported in Waterloo, N.
Hosea E Case, long time Washington high school science and Bible instructor, died at his home after a prolonged illness. Born 1859 in Wisconsin, he taught in Milner, Benton, Livingston before joining Washington in 1894. Funeral 2:30 PM at Presbyterian church with burial in Him Grove. Survived by wife Annie Thomas and two sons Ralph and Louds. daughter Hannah Eunice died in infancy. sister Eliza Case and Rose Treloar also listed.

In Denver, Pearl O'Loughlin was found guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of her 10 year old stepdaughter Loona. The girl’s battered body was found by Berkeley Park lake on October 17 after being fed broken glass and struck with a fire iron. The verdict came after a five day police interrogation.
The House approved a $110 million unemployment relief bill to fund immediate work on river and harbor and highway projects. President Hoover denounced proposed tax-funded relief expansions, saying prosperity cannot come from raiding the treasury. The measure moved the spending deadline to Sept. 1, 1931, with swift House action anticipated though Senate debate may differ.
A time bomb wrecked part of the American Furniture Mart in Chicago causing an estimated 15 000 to 20 000 in damage. Tony May, known as The Millionaire News boy, was killed and his son Eugene 16 was seriously injured when a package bomb exploded in his hands. The blast tore a 20 by 20 foot area, shattered office equipment, and blew out 45 sixth floor windows along with others in nearby apartments and clubs.
