Washington County to vote on Title XX funding 1977
The Washington County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing at 7 30 p m Monday in the board courthouse office on federal Title XX funding for 1977. Title XX supports the County Developmental Center Children s House and Community Counseling Service. Roger Reed of Cedar Rapids social services administrator will attend. A civil service exam for law enforcement officers will be offered at the Public Safety Center in Washington Saturday January 22 at 9 a m. Sheriff Yale Jarvis says it is open to current officers and interested applicants.

Park Traffic Ban At Sunset Park To Start Monday
Ray Watson, chairman of the Washington City Park Board, announced Sunset Park will close to all vehicular traffic starting Monday December 13. The ban covers motorized craft including snowmobiles and autos and remains until further notice to give youths a safer area for winter sports like sledding.

Two Car Crashes In Washington County Leave Damaged Roadside Assets
Two separate one car accidents in Washington County damaged a railroad crossing signal and a highway guard rail. Stephen J. Sieren of Keota fell asleep, struck the signal at highways 1 and 92, injuring $1,000 in damage and facing a failure to stop charge. Christopher K. Zehr of Washington struck the guard rail along highways 92 and 1 and was charged with failure to control his vehicle. In Des Moines a New Jersey man, Panama George Nelson, 37, Newark, N.J., was ordered to answer federal bank robbery charges December 17 for the Valley National Bank drive-in holdup, held on $75,000 bond. a juvenile female arrested in connection remained unnamed by U.S. Attorney George Perry.

Washington and Keota High Schools sent students to the University of Iowa for the third annual Science and Education Conference, drawing about 250 attendees. Richard V. Officer Killed in Iowa High Speed Chase
Tom Cooley, 20, of Washburn, is held on a motor vehicle theft charge after a fatal chase that killed La Porte City policeman Cecil Laframboise. Cooley faces additional counts in Buchanan Black Hawk and Benton counties after his Independence arrest. The pursuit began in Waterloo, continued through Black Hawk and Benton counties, and ended when Laframboise’s patrol car collided with a semi near Vinton. Cooley then allegedly fled in a farm pickup and was captured in Independence. One man injured in the ensuing wreck.
