Plans for a Washington Community Center party on December 11 were canceled after the entertainment group could not attend. The event will be rescheduled in January.
High school students and adults interested in constructing or purchasing model railroad cars are invited to attend a meeting at the YMCA on December 28 at 7 p.m. in the McCleery room. Walter Griffin of Washington provides further information.
Sue Arthur 19 of rural Crawfordsville will be a candidate in Des Moines for the Iowa Princess Soya contest at 6 30 p m Monday during the Iowa Soybean Association annual meeting at the Hilton Inn. Governor Robert Ray will take part in the joint banquet and event. The winner will represent Iowa for one year and may compete nationally in Louisville in August.
In Shenandoah Iowa voters rejected a 2.7 million dollar school bond that would fund a new junior high. About 2000 residents braved bitter cold to vote and the measure failed with 28 percent approval, short of the 60 percent required.
The Historic Conger House extends hours on Sunday December 12 to allow employed families to view eight decorated trees. A lamp-light tour is planned from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with regular tours on Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. Mrs. Santa Claus returns to greet children, gingerbread ovens operate in the pioneer kitchen, and hosts including Arden Freel David Miksch Mary Conger Helen Wilson Virginia Pettet Mary Gale Letts Russell Davison Grove Letts Thelma Wagner and committee offer wassail and cookies in the dining room.
A large barn on Bob Swift’s Washington area farm burned Tuesday afternoon, with firemen battling flames for hours until water ran short. Hay and farm machinery were lost, while other equipment was saved. Cause remains unknown. Swift had inspected the barn at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The Southern Regional Council charges that bureaucratic and political resistance to the 1967 child health law keeps poor children in the South from receiving essential medical services. Investigators cite doctor shortages, low Medicaid reimbursement, heavy paperwork, and lack of transportation as key barriers across multiple Southern cities.

United Press International reports bitter cold across Iowa with record lows in Sioux City 15 below and Mason City 14 below. A Montana low pressure system moving through the Dakotas and into Iowa Thursday is expected to bring clouds, possible snow and freezing rain, with highs in the teens to 30s and several degrees of warming later in the week. Road conditions vary from normal winter driving to 50 percent snow cover as skies clear in parts of the state.
Washington County 4H seeks Iowa families to host roughly 50 Japanese youths for 3 to 4 weeks starting late July in the third year of the Labo Exchange. With four to six accompanying adults, hosts should offer rural living and cover meals and lodging costs and attend state 4-H orientation. Applications due January 31, 1977 at the Washington County Extension Office.
A Marshall County family perished in a two story wooden home near Melbourne Iowa after a blaze that began about 3 am. Tom Andrews 39 and his children James 15 Janelle 12 and Jeri 10 were inside as flames gutted the house. The body of a child was found below a bedroom as the structure burned out. Fire crews from Melbourne Haverhill and Rhodes fought the fire. The state fire marshal investigates the cause while neighbors and authorities await the blaze to subside.
The Iowa Commerce Commission ordered Iowa Power and Light Co to refund 5.86 million in excess electric and gas revenues from 1975 to about 200000 customers, about 30 per customer, after approving only part of a 13.28 million rate increase. The plan includes 496000 in gas refunds at 8 percent interest. Electric refunds await rate design decisions.
Iowa's 104 county fairs posted a record annual profit over 1 million dollars, aided by non fair income from boat and snowmobile storage, racing, and other activities. Total fair income reached 3,669,699 with expenses at 3,962,064, while non fair operations added 1,310,892 profit. Attendance set a new high at 2,665,126, surpassing 1975.

Gov. Robert D. Ray urged revising Iowa county road classifications to reflect actual usage amid dispute over state fuel funds. Ray planned talks in Washington with President-elect Carter on federal revenue sharing.
