Tuba Christmas Concert at Chicago Civic Center

Gary McCurdy Washington Junior High band director will perform at the Chicago Civic Center on Friday December 17. Harvey Phillips of the University of Indiana produces the event and Colonel Arnold Gabriel of the U S Air Force Band conducts. A national choir of tuba players will play holiday music arranged by Alec Wilder.

VA benefits to Iowans rise by 17.8 million this year

Des Moines VA regional director Bob Winters announced that Iowa received 212.6 million dollars in Veterans Administration assistance during the last fiscal year. He noted a 17.8 million increase for 1976, with the largest share in disability benefits and pensions.

Jasper County attorney steps down amid criminal charges

Kenneth Whitehead, 28, temporarily resigns as Jasper County attorney in Newton Iowa saying he will return once cleared. He faces charges including offering to shield a Newton woman from jail in exchange for sex, interfering with justice, and concealing stolen merchandise. A grand jury will be convened by the Iowa attorney general's office.

No charges in death of patrolman Laframboise

Vinton Iowa police say Officer Gabriel Laframboise died in the line of duty when his vehicle hit a semi while pursuing a suspect wanted for a minor traffic violation. Tom Cooley 20 Washburn was arrested on auto theft charges. authorities said no one will be held criminally responsible.

Two Vehicles Recovered After Theft Spree in Iowa County

Washington County officers report two cars stolen in the area have been recovered. The first car, stolen December 8, was taken from Larry Reese of rural Riverside and found in Lee County. A second car owned by Durance E. Sheely of Cedar Rapids was stolen and abandoned near the Highland Iowa Township border, close to the Reese site, suggesting the same thief.

EPA recalls 208000 Chrysler 1975 cars over carburetor errors

Washington County Extension elects eight members

Eight township Extension elections in Washington County reconfigured the 15 member Extension Council. Two incumbents were reelected Terry Greiner and Dan Peiffer for 2 year terms. Six new members begin January 1 including Mike Roberts replacing Gary Stewart in Oregon Township and John Spenner replacing Barbara Thompson in Iowa Township. The 1977 council will hold its organization meeting January 4 at the County Extension Office.

County charged with sex discrimination in pay

The U S Labor Department charged Kossuth County treasurer's office in Algona with illegal sex discrimination under the Fair Labor Standards Act. A civil complaint seeks an injunction and back pay with interest for clerks paid less than male counterparts for equal work. A Cedar Rapids court order also required a Manchester hotel to pay 16982 in back wages to 93 employees.

Cusack to head Iowa House appropriations committee

Speaker Dale Cochran named Rep. Gregory Cusack of Davenport as chair of the House appropriations committee with Rep. Keith Dunton moving to ranking majority member.
