Washington city council chose Ralph Martin to fill the remainder of the late L Cloud Willits term. He would take the office January 1, after winning the forthcoming term, with the action covering the current month.
At the Washington convention, American Farm Bureau leaders urged delegates to support President Nixon’s Vietnam policy while reaffirming farm policies that oppose further concessions to current farm programs. Proposals include phasing out farm price supports, ending Class I milk pricing, curbing hobby farming tax breaks, and boosting cooperative marketing.
Senate Finance Committee may be instructed to strip main features that Nixon threatened to veto. Williams and Scott hint at recommitting the bill to remove Social Security boost and higher personal exemption, while Mansfield defends the amendments. ATHENS UPI severe downdraft during a thunderstorm likely caused the Olympic Airways jet to crash into a tree-covered mountainside killing all 90 aboard. Winds near the crash zone were about 40 mph from the Aegean. newspapers speculated lightning may have struck the plane. Captain George Koloumoudiotis was named in reports. Olympic officials denied hearing such a radio transmission.
Leaders of the Los Angeles raid acknowledge tactics may have been flawed after a five hour gun and bomb confrontation with Panthers. Eleven armed suspects surrendered as up to 300 officers moved in, three officers wounded and five Panthers treated for injuries. Authorities recovered multiple weapons and two submachine guns.
In Des Moines a section of the voter reform bill, passed by the state Senate in 1969, is reportedly being altered to ensure no college student loses the right to vote. Gov. Ray avoided veto implications but rejected any provision denying student voting rights, noting changes are aimed to his satisfaction. The bill also requires voters to register at least every three years to maintain status.
Senator Jack Miller of Iowa steered an amendment through by voice vote to block capital gains treatment on profits from property tied to criminal activity and cap depreciation deductions. Miller said the rule targets mafia narcotics and other syndicates and helps deter criminals from infiltrating legitimate business while aiding law enforcement.
South Viet Namese military spokesmen report multiple Viet Cong attacks causing 15 civilian or trainee deaths and 104 wounded with no guerrilla losses. An outpost near the Cambodian border faced a second strike in six days. Mekong Delta defenses repelled a mortar assault, with 10 guerrillas killed and light defender losses. Civilian casualties include two dead and 79 wounded from shelling and a village theater bombing near Saigon. A Dalat police training center assault killed 13 trainees and wounded 25. Other sites across the country endured rocket and mortar fire, with two Americans wounded.
United Press International reports cloudy weather in Iowa tonight and Wednesday with a slight chance of snow. Warmer temperatures in the north tonight, lows in the 20s and highs in the 30s on Wednesday, and a partly cloudy outlook for Thursday with little temperature change.
