At St Luke's Hospital Sioux City a fire in a linen store room on the ground floor led to 44 patients being moved but caused no major injuries. A firefighter was cut, and smoke filled the building though patients remained unharmed. Major damage was to inventory in a 20 by 20 foot room.
W A Tony Boyle easily wins a second five year term as head of the United Mine Workers of America. Unofficial returns show Boyle with 72 858 votes to 40 702 for Joseph A Yablonski. Yablonski aides promise possible legal action over union money and personnel used in the campaign.
Iowa City readers learn that Hong Kong Portrait of the Orient will be shown as the next Iowa Mountaineers film lecture. Ray Green will illustrate how East and West meet in Hong Kong while touring the city’s shops, harbor, and countryside. Tickets and season passes are available at the auditorium door Sunday.
University of Iowa dean M L Huil says drug abuse is a societal problem not just a high school issue. Iowa officials urge engaging former addicts in education, warn against fantasy textbooks, plan 16 regional meetings in February and March to promote factual programs on drug use and effects.
Judge Bernard Brominski ruled there is insufficient evidence to support a cause of death other than asphyxiation by immersion in the Chappaquiddick incident. The decision ends a 17 week fight over exhumation and autopsy proposed by Massachusetts District Attorney Edmund S. Dinis. The Kopechne family, from Berkeley Heights, NJ, had opposed any autopsy.

Nixon’s 1.6 billion foreign aid bill clears the House by 200 to 195 amid last minute switches and secret documents. The measure includes 100.4 million for extra military aid to Nationalist China and South Korea, a provision not initially sought by the administration. Senate fate uncertain as opposition looms.
United Press International reports Iowa will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies and cooler conditions tonight with lows in the teens northwest to the 20s in the southeast. Thursday brings more clouds and highs in the 30s to near 40, with Friday remaining partly cloudy and seasonable.
Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki received a marriage license in New York amid a consent hitch as Miss Vicki’s father Alan Budinger was absent. City Clerk Herman Katz dated the license and planned to wait for the father’s personal consent before the ceremony. The couple met in June in a Philadelphia department store for NBC Tonight Show plans.
Iowa City attorney Robert Osmundson, 50, was chosen by Governor Ray to fill the ninth district court seat. He will oversee cases across Linn Johnson Jones Cedar and Iowa Counties replacing Warren Rees who moved to the Iowa Supreme Court. Osmundson earned his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1942.
The Senate eyed a provision to curb cheap foreign goods as part of a $15.8 billion tax cuts package. Norris Cotton urged limiting imports, accusing Maurice Stans of ignoring flood of shoes textiles and electronics. Javits warned the move likely won’t pass.
Sixty four Vietnamese peasants surrendered to U S troops north of Saigon seeking asylum from Viet Cong harassment. Government reports tally 6 064 civilian deaths 15 115 wounded and 6 117 kidnapped this year.
Iowa Supreme Court upholds Humboldt County ruling that home owners Peter and Leora Dunn failed to provide safe passage to the mailbox. Spencer mailman Wendell Capener, 40, won nine thousand plus damages for injuries from a December 31, 1964 fall on their icy porch. The court says forewarning was required and the Duins bear responsibility.

Rex Todd of Columbus City remained in fair condition at Washington County Hospital after being struck by an east bound freight train while driving a road maintainer near the Rock Island Lines depot at Columbus Junction. Todd suffered head cuts and body bruises with extensive damage to the machine.
The Christmas cantata scheduled at United Methodist church in Letts was postponed from last Sunday due to heavy snow. It will be presented there Sunday Dec 14 at 7 30 p m. The same cantata will be performed tonight at 7 30 p m at United Presbyterian church in Columbus Junction.
American Farm Bureau delegates debate 1970 resolutions favoring reduced federal farm oversight with exceptions for peanuts tobacco sugar and rice. President Shuman forecasts continued backing of present farm programs while praising Nixon administration policy hints and Hardin remarks.
