Sumner residents voted 163 to 93 to transfer control of the municipal light and power plant from the city council to a board of three trustees. Trustees will serve six-year terms, marking a shift in governance of the utility.
Iowa unemployment officials removed 764 unemployed individuals from benefit rolls last month by placing them in work. Several had not yet drawn compensation checks, the commission reported.
A house fire at A W Crane’s suburban Ames farm destroyed a broader home and 200 fattened turkeys. The birds were for holiday marketing and would have been ready in two weeks. Crane estimated the loss at 600 dollars.
Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Nyholm arrived home in Council Bluffs after a European trip. They delayed departure due to war, then sailed on the Skan-YarrR limited liner, which carried 140 passengers instead of 90. The Iceland route ship completed the 17 day Atlantic crossing to America.
Charles Schulte, 86, a German immigrant who settled here 75 years ago, left each of his 12 children a farm or cash equivalent. He was buried Thursday after accumulating land beyond the home place to grant farms to his six sons and cash to his six daughters.
Former Des Moines Police Chief Henry A. Alber returns to duty as assistant chief after suspension linked to the three forgotten men case. Alber resumes civil service rank while J. A. Brophy remains chief of detectives. Floyd Hartzer keeps acting police chief title.
Mrs Monica Eich of Marshalltown leaves two sisters and a brother in Germany each $700. Several other bequests totaling $4,300 go to individuals and religious institutions. The remainder of the estate goes to nephew Andrew Eich of Marshalltown.
Gene Buck president of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers files a federal suit in Davenport claiming Lafayette Hotel Co Clin ton used songs in Armistice day entertainment infringing copyrights. He seeks injunction and damages.
Wallace and Old Lincoln pupils will transfer to the new Lincoln grade school on South Fourth Avenue next Monday. About 300 students will move as teachers also relocate, with Harry Bowles as principal and Miss Helen Levis as vice principal. Dedication is set for January 9 with Dr KE Peterson to speak.
Phoenix residents reported two dangerous inmates at large after escape from the state hospital for the insane. Bruno Hanks, a 25 year old violent rapist described as the most dangerous male inmate, escaped using a locked door and a sharp instrument. He weighed 90 pounds and stood six feet three inches, prompting sheriff Lon Jordan to deploy forces and urge caution, especially for girls.
Don Cameron a 35 year old salesman executed five murders two robberies a kidnapping and finally killed himself after setting his house ablaze. He shot a gasoline station owner in Aville sparked a cemetery attack and wounded three others before the lakeside blaze and his death.
Irene Wilson awarded prizes at the county poultry show quilt and rug exhibit. Top honors went to Mrs Tom Sterling for best quilt and best centerpiece, with multiple exhibitors earning loot from local merchants and farms.
Leigh Bell has received a commission advancing from major to lieutenant colonel. He is the grandson of Col. W. B. Bell and Capt. J. A. Cunningham, Civil War officers, and nephew to John and James Cunningham and Mrs. Will Wilson. Bell is stationed at Shreveport Louisiana in charge of the cadet corps at the University of Louisiana.
Cyrus chapter of the Royal Arch Masons held its annual election. Andrew Kelso was chosen high priest, Wisie Long king, Roger Sherman scribe, A W Yard secretary, and George McDaniel treasurer. Installations occur in January.
Washington City Council voted to accept title to the new armory building and grounds for Troop F, 113th Cavalry, with the troop retaining first use and the city handling upkeep. Rental income will fund heat and utilities, with 3750 yearly state rent and 3250 toward construction costs totaling 38000, to be repaid over about 17 years. Chautauqua Park will also transfer back to the city upon completion.

The 1934 farm program awards 58790.31 in benefit checks were received at the Washington county agricultural conservation office amid a two day total of 220617.16 with 161826.85 of that amount arriving yesterday. Distribution for the 1900 participating farmers will proceed next week at banks and offices across Riverside Kalona Wellman West Chester Crawfordsville Ainsworth and Brighton. Allotments for next year set 127269 acres for soil depleting crops and 76495 for corn with corn yield rising 6.1 bushels per acre from last year. County chairman Wayne Norman notes corn loans nearing 400000 will be arranged soon.
Grade school children from rural schools and other towns in Washington county attend a free morning movie at the State Theater as part of a Chamber of Commerce Christmas program. Washington pupils are excluded because they attend a separate free showing in the theater manager Ralph Pratt’s later presentation.
Argentina warned the League of Nations it will resign if Russia is not expelled for invading Finland. The ultimatum will be formally presented to the league assembly on Monday with Argentina seeking to speak first and unite allies among delegates.

A bicycle safety battalion for junior high students to promote safe riding and observe regulations has been reorganized in Washington. George Mohr announced the move, with Shirley Dunlap as captain and Hetty Snakenberg, Lois Mace as lieutenants and Carolyn Bond as adjutant. Twenty members start, with plans for more groups later. The group enjoys a hike south of town and a noon meal during their activities.
Latin American delegations begin a series of meetings aimed at finding a way to aid Finland against Russia as the European war continues. The effort marks the league's first activity since the war's outbreak.
