Mrs. Sarah Kent of Humboldt dies at 96. A former girl singer who sang before General Ulysses Grant at a Boston peace jubilee, she was Humboldt’s oldest resident. Her husband and four brothers were Civil War veterans.
Ada ir residents approve a 20 year renewal of the Iowa Electric Co franchise by 299 to 86. The utility will install street lighting along Highway 6 and electrify the business district with new streetcar lighting.
Floyd C Johnston of Columbus Junction was named president of the fifth district Iowa County Officers association at the annual meeting here. Jesse Hoover of Centerville was named vice president and Robert Johnson of Knoxville was named secretary treasurer.
In Marcus Iowa a 3000 bushel batch of corn from the Gods Acres plan for the Methodist church will be officially sealed Saturday. H J Dietrich of the Iowa AAA committee will keynote a noon luncheon. Forty three participating farmers delivered the corn for sealing.
Two Sioux City firms Holdcroft Transportation and Tangwann Tran ger were ordered by District Judge Miles W Newby to haul merchandise for other companies despite a union labor dispute. The John O Knutson Co and DPD K Baxter Co claimed their shipments were rejected because their workers were deemed unfair by AFL unions at the Holdcroft and Tangermann warehouses.
The government tightens access at the Rock Island arsenal to reduce sabotage risk. Col. Norman H. Ramsey says visitors are barred from industrial areas unless wearing linen badges and escorted by an officer.
Des Moines police report 55-year-old Harry Peres arrested after his car struck 64-year-old Charles G. Burrell of Boone crippled by infantile paralysis. Peres denied charges and pleaded not guilty to failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to give name and address.
Des Moines veteran lawyer Burnstedt dissected the phrase incompetent, irrelevant and immaterial at a Polk county Iowa Legal Institute meeting in Hotel Kirkwood. He argued that courtroom language confuses many lawyers and noted jargon used by attorneys in objecting to evidence.
Captain Jay Brown says Troop F of the 113th Cavalry will move horses to the new armory by next Tuesday and be settled before the dedication next Thursday evening. Electric work, heating, and furnishings progress while hay and oats are stored in the stable. The exterior has been improved with grading and fencing changes, including a new corrals fence south of the armory.
Washington county chapter reports 2016 Red Cross members after a broad peace time drive led by roll call chair Rose M. Reid. The county total includes 2009 annual memberships and 826 in Washington itself plus 1,188 in other towns and country areas.
Mrs Bob Reece and her daughter Mary Lou from Ainsworth spent the day in town, visiting friends and enjoying local shops.
About 150 business leaders and farmers met at the Y M C A to approve staging a three day October corn festival in 1940 with national help. Frank B. Miller presented the plan and three new directors were elected to the Chamber of Commerce board. Frank L. Buckingham of Kansas City spoke on Europe and democracy, noting inefficiencies in Soviet collective farming and warning of looming war.
Chairman Leslie Dunlap reports the Washington Y M C A drive has collected 5380 in contributions and pledges toward a 5500 goal. The campaign remains active as several potential donors have not yet pledged, and the fund is needed to operate the Y next year.
Washington county agriculture office distributed 161 826 55 in farm program payments for 1939 to 875 county farmers with 1 900 total in the county receiving checks nationwide about 1 000 more to come this year. Chairman Wayne Norman said parity payments earlier in the year totaled 185 888 65 on corn and wheat and about 204 039 remains to be received when the rest arrive. Farmers to be notified by mail when and where to call for their checks with distribution starting early next week in various towns.
Thieves broke into a Rock Island box at Brighton station overnight and stole mail bags. Amount of mail unknown but no registered items were taken and loot deemed not highly valuable. Sheriff Putnam and Deputy Kiesey investigated with postal inspectors from Burlington and St Louis. A similar theft occurred eight to ten years ago.
A man driving a truck with Polk county plates forced two other drivers off the road about eleven this morning a short distance east of town. The truck number 77-182 was reported and a police radio notice issued in hopes the driver would be stopped and brought to court.
Art Prall heads a Washington County poultry show as president of the Washington County Poultry Breeders association. Judges and winners are listed, led by the Reister trophy for Best Display and Grand Champion Bird of Show awarded to Nelson Hatchery Packwood. The event runs at city hall with entries open for pickup Saturday.
Reuters reports from Helsinki say Russian reinforcements push into southeastern lake country while a red army move in Karelia and the far north seeks to outflank Finland’s main defense. Heavy losses occur as Finnish sharpshooters in white cloaks claim a two mile advance near the frontline.
Judge P J Siegers of Newton ruled in favor of Brighton Mutual Telephone Co. against W D Hanna Co of Burlington. Hanna claimed ownership of shares and about 1700 in dividends, but the court upheld Brighton practices of paying dividends as reduced local telephone rates and taxed costs to the plaintiff. The Millen v Burrolds matter was dismissed with costs, and court adjourned to Dec 15 with a term opening in Sigourney next Monday.
Country and town children show keen interest in a toy farm exhibit at Smart and Parrish Implement company on North Iowa avenue. The display features a model farm with power equipment and miniature tractors and combines, representing the latest International Harvester Company toy models for sale at the store.
A first district meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held in Mount Pleasant on December 10. Washington county post members plan to attend and Henry county post hosts are noted for past hospitality. Several department officers are scheduled to speak.
Ira Rathmel came home Tuesday from University hospital in Iowa City after a two week stay as a patient. He is improving very nicely.
