A Missouri man in Hills, California, visits a Shanty eatery with a Mis sav i to Chicago. After sitting, quaffing water, and finishing a drink, he tries to leave but is challenged by a head waiter who objects to leaving after drinking water. He retorts that he cannot stagger out.
Washington plans to move the $110 million unemployment relief construction bill through the House in one day after a reduction from $150 million. The appropriations committee will report the measure and forward it to the chamber.
Police deployed tear gas bombs and bayonets to break a River side textile mill strike in Danville Virginia. Thirty four strikers were arrested and jailed including women ages sixteen to sixty six. A non union worker C W McKellan was injured and hospitalized after blows alleged from strikers.
A fire in the boiler room of the high school yesterday evening caused only minor damage. Waste paper, baled and stored, burned briefly. two ladders and a cabinet scorched. Firemen limited damage with chemical extinguishers and water. no impact on heating equipment or gym area.
Albert Layman, 63, goes on trial in Macon for assault with intent to kill in an 1889 ax blow on Thomas J. Billings. Billings and his three lawyer sons arrive to aid the prosecution while Layman denies living in Macon then and claims mistaken identity. The case stems from a 40 year old indictment and Layman was arrested at Blackwell Oklahoma.
Weather outlook for December to 18, 1930 covers upper Mississippi lower Missouri valleys and northern central Great Plains with little precipitation and temperatures largely above normal. Colder in northern portions near week end away from boiler room. The room cleaned up and broken windows repaired. A fire at Milwaukee freight depot occurred shortly before 1 pm with a root blaze started by a spark from a passing engine and extinguished with minor damage.
Former Judge Ben Lindsey faced a magistrate after being ejected from the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York for interrupting Sunday service during a dispute with Bishop William T Manning over companionate marriage. He pled not guilty to a disorderly conduct charge.
About 2009 people attended the opening of Sherman Funeral Home last Friday and Saturday. Roger Sherman announced the attendance figures and floral displays enhanced the event. Wellington DeMotte of Boston, Heinz National Casket Co representative, and others from Chicago and Columbus aided at the ceremonies.
Don Holt of Brighton was arraigned before Justice of the Peace W F Earber after a yesterday forgery arrest. He was ordered held to await action by the district court when Judge D W Hamilton of Grinnell returns next Friday. Mr and Mrs T F Jackson and Mrs Bessie Tucker visited E Beatty's West Munro home Sunday.
H A Wallace editor of Wallaces' Farmer spoke at the Washington County Farm Bureau meeting urging farmers to stay patient and industrious. He blamed a global mood on efficiency gains, postwar Europe debt relief shifts, tariff impacts, and monetary policy, and urged support for cooperative groups to spur prosperity, plus a plan to have the Federal Reserve buy more bonds to lift prices. The event followed a Farm Bureau program featuring a play, a county agent report noting 94 new members and the 495 existing, and honors for 4H members and leaders.
Federal dry law enforcement reports record activity with 68,173 arrests and 8,633 seized cars worth 3,290,830 plus 64 barrels valued at 687,480 in the year ending July 1. Courts issued 54,084 convictions, with 22,405 jail sentences averaging 94 days per conviction and 227 days per jailed offender.

Manager Ralph Pratt announced a complete floor replacement and rapid renovations at the State theatre. A new canopy will start December 22, fully lit for advertising. Interior redecoration, improved acoustics, new scenery, stage sets, lighting, and reconfigured seating aim to give patrons full vision and modern comfort. Local shoppers noted in attendance include Frank Stoutner and relatives, Will Anwyl, Lynn Ferguson, W R Stewart, Vera Page, Lyle Maxwell, and R H Paul.
President Hoover asked Congress for an additional 150 million dollars for the Federal Farm Board to be available immediately, bringing the total authorized to 400 million from a 500 million revolving fund. The move comes as the board expands operations amid drought and farm relief efforts.
Mayo's Bakery moved into a new west side square location and began operations this weekend with interior work ongoing. A formal opening is planned soon and will be announced in a few days. The shop will be known as Mayo's Pastry Shop and Bakery.
Albert Lee Taylor had an ear abscess and is improving after it was lanced on Saturday evening. Medical treatment relieved pressure and boosted his recovery. He remains under care and reports better comfort today.
Tony May, a renowned Chicago news dealer nicknamed "the millionaire news boy," died from a parcel bomb he opened thinking it was a birthday gift. His son Eugene, 16, was injured as the box exploded, wrecking a room and sending May to his death amid a deafening blast.
