Washington High Jazz Band Wins At Augustana Festival
The Washington High School Jazz Band placed first in class B at the fourth annual Augustana High School Jazz Band Festival on the Augustana College campus in Rock Island Illinois. Twenty nine bands from three midwestern states competed in all day events with morning clinics and afternoon finals. Director Rob Shepherd led the VHS group with four members earning outstanding performance certificates Kent Keating Bob Boyd Tim King and Jeff Goodell. The band will next perform at Coe College Jazz Festival in Cedar Rapids on January 18.

Iowa governor's budget hearings lead to December public hearing
Gov. Robert D. Ray pushed budget hearings for the Iowa Legislature with departments including Job Service of Iowa, the Executive Council, and the Campaign Finance Disclosure Commission on the agenda. He will chair a public hearing on December 14 to collect citizen testimony on the budget. A fugitive from Sullivan County Jail in Milan, Missouri, Clinton Rogers, 29, was found dead in Centerville, believed frozen near his brother's back door around 7:30 a.m. An autopsy was ordered. Rogers had escaped from the Missouri jail and had previous surrender.
